No, they are not - there are numerous other American doughtnut chains that are as good if not better than Krispy Kreme. Unfortunately none of them bothered to come over here so we are stick with Krispy Kreme and a pricing strategy that takes advantage of the legions of hipsters who think paying more than 10 quid for 12 donuts is some sort of badge of honour.

A shame, as they are nice, but the prices are ridiculous and the same donut from Krispy Kreme in the US is about 60 pence.

For a similar effect see also Five Guys - 15 quid for a burger that's better than but still the same concept as a Burger King (Paper wrapping, cardboard cup, box of chips). Which is also about twice as much as it costs back in the home market. Yet every weekend the queue is out of the door so people can show Instragram they spent 15 quid on a burger and chips.

So in my post I said the following -

They are expensive
They are the most sexual doughnuts you can get

And you replied with 'no they are not' and went on to explain that they are crazy overpriced (which is exactly what I said anyway) and that there are much better doughnuts in America...... Which is completely irrelevant as 99% of people on here live in the the UK and only have access to Krispy kremes and not these other special American doughnuts that put Krispy to shame.

So to sum up - you agree with my post, but not on a global scale.

lack of competition? A standard strategy don't you think?

Good for them. Petrol prices are also different... who would have thought it?!

I came in here anticipating a voucher for a free doughnut or something... I am disappointed :(

Lidl do the best alternative to Krispy Kreme and they cost 25p each. My local branch bakes them fresh daily in the new in-store bakery. The glaze tastes and feels every bit as good as the Krispy Kreme version that often costs £1 or more, EACH!

I second this, our local Lidl opened their bakery last year, everything is amazing from there.

There is some strong enforcement of what are entirely subjective opinions in this thread, so I shall continue.

Doughnuts are disgusting and you are all mental for eating them.

I've had Krispy Kremes a couple of times when colleague have brought them, with great fanfare, into the office.

Totally underwhelmed, to be honest. What am I missing?

Yes, I do think. What gave you the impression otherwise? They sell them for what the market will bear - KK is 'cool' and the premium price reinforces this and stimulates demand.

The issue therefore is not KK (or Five Guys) who quite sensibly charge the maximum price the market will bear. The issue is with the fact people are prepared to pay £1.50 for a single donut or £15 for burger and chips from a paper packet. It's madness.

Good for them. Petrol prices are also different... who would have thought it?!

Petrol prices are different because of vastly increased government taxation, so an irrelevant point.
