**** Sony Xperia Z3 ****

i bought a 99p s line wave case off ebay, it's perfect apart from one thing. that magnetic charging thing i got off amazon doesn't fit, the hole is slightly too small, so i'm going to make it wider using a scalpel.

anyone know of a cheap case which fits the magtron x2 magnector charging adapter? by cheap i mean <£5

otherwise i'll stick with a butchered 99p gel case

I was recommended the Case-Mate Tough and I'm very happy with it.

That and a tempered glass screen protector, great combo.

I've got that case and it's fantastic. The only gripe I have is that the volume / camera buttons are too hard to press resulting in less than optimal pictures.

I was looking at that case but it seems to leave half the phone unprotected?

I wouldn't say unprotected as it leaves room to place it in a dock or gain access to the magnetic / USB port.

There's an adequate lip to give it protection so should it fall on that side it's protected. Well worth getting even if the buttons are stiff.

Maybe I got that wrong, basically just looking for a cable that'll allow me to output my phone's screen onto an external display.

You just need a chromecast or other wifi receiver in your tv hdmi socket, I think the old mhl thing has been superceded, saying this though you should know I'm probably one of the least tech aware people on the board.

Though I'll admit I was going to do the same joke but didn't feel confident enough in my tech knowledge.

Chromecast is only compatible with a limited number of apps and media.

Mhl requires usb slot on the phone which is fiddly imo with the waterproof cover.

I prefer to use my smart tvs built in features like dlna, Netflix, YouTube synchronised with phone.

So I don't use a wire or a dongle and can play anything I want

The main reason I want to display from my phone onto the TV is because I have quite a few courses from Udemy and they only allow you to download the courses to your mobile device.

My internet isn't particularly fast so I want to download the courses instead of streaming them. That way I don't hog the bandwidth when I start watching a course.

Do you think any old MHL will work?

Doesn't matter, you can just mirror the phone's screen so whatever is showing on your phone will appear on TV.

Most of the apps that matter stop that happening..eg the itv apps

On 4 of the tvs in the house I only have chromecasts to control the tv no terrestrial or cable connection. Chromecast is easier to manage than a smart tv. I have netflix, now tv and bbc iplayer so that handles pretty much all you would want. I also use an app called bubbleupnp which allows me to chromecast from other media apps on the phone as well as chromecast video on the phone

How can an app stop your phone from mirroring it's screen?
Android has a flag if you like that says "i'm casting the screen" and apps can check this flag to see if it is true or false (and if true, by what method). It is set true for Chromecast screencast, miracast screencast and TV out via MHL. These apps check the flag and then stop working when they see it typically.

Thanks Sky et al, really good job there.
