Tractors

Get a Massey 20 a little bit faster than a 135 :D

You're not giving much info here about scale of feeding etc. There's a little Kubota on the smallholding which has been brilliant for years, only change was a widening of rear wheelbase and ballast in the rear tyres since a lot of the land is on a steep slope.

I feel the OP lacks details!

I did mention in the OP that we want something 100HP with a loader for feeding stock and cleaning out sheds on a livestock farm.

I do hear good things about these kubota's being very reliable.

We have around 12 stables, and 30 odd cattle in the sheds at the moment, where we plan to use this machine. Our farms are divided and split up considerably, but between home and the 2nd patch is around 4-5 miles. Have a set of rear r34 twins spare should we need them on the steep side land ground.

We do have larger tractors, but these machines live 40+ miles away.

What about a Valtra

Granted i dont get too drive that many small tractors but i know i would rather be using one of them than a Kubota. The Fergie will be a decent one too

Kubota are indeed a good brand when it comes to excavators, we have one at my workplace and it's a pleasure to operate. Never come across their tractors though.

May I ask what livestock you keep? The reason I ask is if it's pigs I would only buy second hand as pig manure is very corrosive as I'm sure you know.

Sheep/beef and we breed and train horses as well as livery.

Kubota demo will be here today, so i'll take some pics/let you know what we think. Personally i think the model the old chap has got on demo will be slightly too small. I would prefer the M110GX over the M9960 but then it's more money so better off with a second hand New holland.

Not that I know much about tractors, but how much do the big top end models from Fendt and Claas actually cost?
The seem hugely powerful on paper!

Well over £100k. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the big ones are over £200k.

Edit: I'm well off the mark. Article here talking about a new Fendt just shy of 400k.

No wonder all our kit is ancient.

Interesting read. The amount of tech on board that! I think it can literally drive itself?
You were correct first time though, the 400k price is actually for a Katana Forage Harvester.

They had a big New Holland Combine at last years Three Counties show in Malvern - one of the ones with tracked front wheels. No idea how much that was!

I just like big machines, but you start to realise how costly running a farm is and why farmers get so up in arms about costs and prices for livestock etc.

Yeah they really are incredible. My uncle has a couple of the tracked John deere combines. We also had a couple on contract this year to do all the wheat and rape.

Compared to 15 or so years ago where it used to take a couple of weeks to do the whole farm, now it can take just a few days.

We are all Massey.

Do you deff need a tractor rather than something like a Merlo?

Definetly, will need 3 point linkage for log splitter, spike, yard scraper etc etc.

:p I cant read it, ask's me to sign up and pay a sub.

I have looked at few comparison video's etc and whilst it's never #1 or towards the top end, it's never far behind.

It's just basic at the end of the day. a lot of people like toys in their machines.

It's arrived so I'll be able to form a better opinion when i get home tonight.

I'm guessing you've got a quad bike to have fun on the farm with? and by quad bike I mean a proper quad bike. Not a "road legal" with silly normal car tyres.

Yes

Anyway's had the kubota for nearly a week.

Better than I thought in some respects. The loader which was kubotas own looked strong and came with a bucket and spikes. Was nice and easy to use and visibility was good.

Turning circle is just brilliant and hellish handy around the sheds. The over all size of the tractor is good and we would not want anything bigger. The 5445 MF we borrowed was a touch on the bigger side and was more difficult to handle around the sheds.

Did a 100 mile round trip to pick up our mini digger and a few large bales of straw. I felt battered, my back was killing after the drive home, however i couldnt adjust the seat properly as it was broke but still the ride was no where near smooth.

To add insult to injury that day i had a warning light on the dash for some filter. I just ignored it until a second one came on with the park light. I pulled over and pressed the button it indicated once in park. 20 bloody minutes i had to sit in the layby with the tractor revving away self cleaning some filter :/ Was quite annoyed with this delay to an already long journey.

The inside of the tractor is basic, not a bad thing to keep things simple but you wouldnt want to spend long hours in it. Some things look flimsy but are also incredibly easily replaced, my old chap liked that, I didnt as i know how much time he spends on maintenance, which i pointed out to him.

The tractor itself looked stronger than i had anticipated. Our mechanic had a good scour around it and was pleasantly suprised by it. (general feeling of most who turned up on the yard).

The cab leaked, i had thought it was the wind blowing water along a vent into the cab but it was leaking on both sides badly. Pretty poor design there.

Whilst I liked and disliked things with this machine, I'm sure we will avoid buying one. It would need to be £5k+ cheaper to justify one as you can pick up so much decent second hand tack with low hours for the same sort of money.

Was looking at a second hand JD 5100R but it sold 30 mins before i called the chap this today. Gutted as it looked a decent machine for the money too.

This will be the Diesel Particulate filter cleaning process, they have this procedure on new tractors which dont use AD blue. If you do a lot of heavy work then it tends to be longer during the times it needs to perform the procedure. But if you do low revs light work it tends to need done more often.

It is a super annoying thing to have tbh. Be aware you will have this on smaller John Deeres now also. I am unsure what others have this also.
