UKIP 1st 100 days Documentary Channel 4 documentary

I like how the Press Officers acts all offended listening to that women saying she doesn't like negroes, whilst having Golliwogs on display herself (the Beeb seemed to have missed this)

On the bottom and, as you'd expect, the far right...

I have a golliwog toy that my mother knitted for me as a child. I just don't know what to do with it now; to me it's a beloved childhood toy not a problematic icon of racial discrimination.

Then put it in your loft.

There is a difference between simply owning a Golliwog, and being UKIP's Press Officer about to film a documentary about your party and racism, and leaving it out on the side when the cameras come around.

She was shown giving a speech about how careful their members must be around the press yet seems not to follow her own rules.

This tbh.

I'd like to see a study on Golliwog ownership by political affiliation.

Your left wing political correctness scares me as much as the UKIP right wing racists.

Eh? You think it is 'left wing political correctness' for me to advise the PR Manager of UKIP to think more carefully before letting cameras into her home?

I look at Golliwogs like Ivory. If you have it because you've kept something "from that time" then fine, but that doesn't mean you should ignore why they are offensive to many people today and to engage your brain once in a while before getting them out and putting them on show.

I'm fairly balanced on the issue of Gollis, I'm not running around saying they should all be destroyed and a prison sentence for anyone who owns one. You, however, seem to be come across as one of those people who can't even see today why they might be offensive at all. One of those people who say "they're just a bit of fun" and laments the loss of black-face entertainers because of 'political correctness'.

How the hell can UKIP be in a position to offer shared government with only 2 MPs? That would necessitate a near-total wipeout of almost every other party.

Not going to happen. Lib Dems will offer the only viable option.

Sounds like a fun mockumentary though. :D

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Current opinion polls (for what they are worth) currently have UKIP well ahead of Libs. Of course on polling day I would imagine (or rather hope !!!) this will change back to the normal voting patterns.A CON/UKIP coalition is a train wreck waiting to happen, more so than the current coalition government.

Most polls put labour & conseravtives well ahead of the rest, with UKIP averaging 20% of the vote.

The key point is that 6% of Labour voters have defected - but 20% of Conservative ones (this is likely to cause them to lose a number of swing seats).

UKIP will most likely cause the Conservative party to lose, which is most amusing (being a victim of FPTP after fighting so hard for it - AV would benefit them). From what I've seen the bookies currently predict a Labour SNP/Lib-dem coalition is the most likely scenario.

While UKIP have 20% of the vote, it's not strong enough in anywhere near enough areas to get an actual seat (this is due to how chronically unpopular they are with anybody below the age of 35), they also have a key issue with being under-represented in women & have failed to woo the over 65's (who are still voting majoritively Conservative).

As the 45-65 age bracket was already slightly leaning to the right, this mass switch to UKIP has caused a huge issue.

The other factor is that 30/35% of Lib-dem voters have returned to Labour (if you look at voting intention) - as opposed to only 15% to the Conservatives (this further causes issues in swing seats).

The death of Lib-dems & the rise of UKIP are the two nails in the coffin for the Conservatives in this election if the polls & analysis are to be believed - the likely coalition with SNP is the push down the incinerator.

Finally Labour have managed to retain 82% of their vote share, with hardly any of them switching to Conservatives - with the Conservatives dropped to 73% - this is very significant.

Stephen Fry has a good quote about offence:

“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so ******g what."

Trawling through a woman's clown collection(!) to find something that offends you is far more abnormal than a woman with a ceramic golliwog which will probably be a cultural artifact from her childhood given her age and fondness of clowns. Trying to use it as a stick to beat her with is a very cheap tactic.

So the fact she used clearly racist terminology & hates black people is irrelevant?.

Criticising a racist for being a racist & having other factors highly correlated with racism is a cheap tactic?, you sir are one massive apologist.

My wife has a collection of Golliwog badges from the Robinsons Jam/marmalade collections, most of which were given to her by a relative (Gran, I think). They're quite fun but, y'know, horribly racist - so they're kept in a box in the attic.

She did ponder getting rid of them, but they're probably worth a fair bit.

Indeed, there is a cultural value of Golliwogs in the same way some prefer the old Tom and Jerry cartoons uncensored because of the mammy character. It happened, get over it, is has a place in history and we are a lesser people to forget our past and how far we have come. I know a lot of Golliwog owners who don't associate it at all with black people at all. To a lot of them it's no more than a fictional character like Winne the Poo.

You seem to think the clown collector and the woman who can't look at Nergos are the same person, they're not the same person, so you massively missed the point

I have no issues about the Golliwog, I grew up with them on the marmalade jar!

But you have to realise if someone is in PR then it is their job to understand about 'Public Relations' and in todays social media driven world, how things are perceived is important (even if the actual issue isn't that important)

So for a UKIP PR woman to have a golliwog in view, no matter how innocent it actually is, is a bit of a big faux pas in the context of her work.

My error - apologies, I assumed it was the same women.

The UKIP generic racist term spouting & scandal occurrences are so common it's hard to keep track.

And playing devils advocate, she never said she 'hated' black people, from what she describes it seems to be some kind of mental phobia over features that a lot of black people don't even have, in which case i think she would have a problem with my girlfriend as although she's Chinese she has that type of nose as well and probably wouldn't have a problem with someone like Beyoncé. I think she just needs professional help from a mental health expert.

Which is great, but at no point have I directly said or implied that I find Golliwogs offensive so I'm not sure why you've posted the above.

I don't know if you're deliberately misrepresenting what I am saying or you're just lacking in comprehension skills. So I'll try AGAIN to explain my posts above...

If your job is the Press Officer of UKIP and you're inviting cameras in to film your clown collection which you know contains Golliwogs, do you think the most sensible thing to do would be...

A) Put them away somewhere for the day as (regardless of what you think about them personally), they have racial taboo connected with them.

B) Leave them out and hope all the people who are already predisposed to think UKIP are racists don't use the sight of the Golli as confirmation bias.

Why are you find this so hard to understand? Think of it this way, If the CEO of Sainsburys was being filmed for a documentary he wouldn't nip into in Tesco for a bit of shopping on film would he? That doesn't mean shopping at Tesco is wrong or I want to beat anyone that does with a stick.

How you can mention context when you are taking the golliwogs out of context for your own agenda I don't know. This 'my **** doesn't stink' politically correct hypocrisy from the left is the scourge of politics today and it is no wonder UKIP are on the rise.

You are playing the offence card, that's why you mentioned it, that's why I rebuked it.

My reading comprehension is fine thanks, your cheap smear tactics aren't though and they are part of the problem of why UKIP is gaining momentum.

Taking a few golliwogs out of context of 1,995 clowns in a woman's collection, who as far as I could tell was actually quite pleasant and moderate, and using it to pour scorn on her is underhanded. Hiding them or airbrushing therm from history not to offend your or others delicate sensibilities is what the likes of New 'don't rock the multicultural boat' Labour would attempt to do.
