Resource extraction sites are where mining for metals takes place. They're found in planetary rings, and spawn wanted ships of various types, which I believe are currently Sidewinder, Eagle, Viper, Cobra and Anaconda. They're a good, steady source of income if you're the one getting the kills for bounties. You also have other NPC bounty hunters and the police there to help you take out targets, meaning it is possible to carefully take down ships that in a straight fight would probably roast your own.

Nav beacons are another decent source of bounty hunting income, in anarchy zones, however here you don't have the assistance of police and it requires the purchase and use of a KWS in order to find who has a bounty. There are also other players here and some of them enjoy making use of the lawlessness to pop your ship for no real reason. :p

Conflict zones are something I would advise avoiding. They're simply not worth it as, despite there generally being more targets available at any one time, you come under fire from a lot more ships at once and the rewards aren't very good. I think I was getting 18k per Anaconda, whereas when it comes to bounties that can range from 50-150k+.

Thanks - I'll go linger around some extraction sites then

Looking forward for the next patch when the repair costs are brought down.

Its bloody crippling in a python. (I am playing it old style atm, so no easy mode shield cells or heatsinks for me)

Extraction sites are fine, maybe a pirate or more normal a NPC ship mining along with a couple of sidey for cover.

So I got this game over the weekend, and I'm really struggling to put bread on the table :(

I'm doing the bulletin board missions I can, but I'm barely getting by.

Will my Sidewinder be able to do some of the bounty hunter missions?

Ideally I'd like to be a trader and move onto exploration.
Takes a good amount of time to really get enough to do some decent trading. Just keep at it & avoid combat until you get enough for a Cobra then gradually upgrade the ship to get 48t on cargo space & do some rare runs will take you a few weeks but its always slow at the start just keep at it!

I think in terms of my time with the game the interdictions seem to be balanced ok. If I stick to my allied systems (Alliance) my interdictions are a lot less frequent and when the do occur 50/50 its just the local police checking me out.

I was interdicted an awful lot on rare runs but that seemed to be because a) It was a long way from the FSD jump to the station in many cases and b) many of the systems were stuffed to the gills with pirates.
I think Rare runs end on the Anarchy systems thats why the interdictions seem worse to me I upgraded my engines now its much easier to evade!

Something isn't right there... fully laden (56T) I have no issues getting away. Maybe you have down level thrusters or something. The boost on the Cobra is crazy, fastest in the game and easy to get away from anything.

I have mine stripped out, no weapons or shields, can't recall exactly what power unit etc. I have, but I have put a fair bit of money in to it, so they are all high grade. That probably does make all the difference, but once you have it outfitted correctly, it's an amazing ship.
You were right mate thanks for the headsup I had to upgrade FSD, thrusters, distributor now I can evade easily cost 2,000,000 cr  but well worth it except for the insurance premium also rises it seems like even in the virtual world the government are taxing us poor gamers ;)

Only C 4 so upgraded & now its ok I can evade more easily (cost almost 2,000,000 cr though for thrusters, FSD & distributor ).

Oh dear me, they get that expensive?

Thought it was bad forking out half a million credits for thrusters, FSD, power generator, etc.

Edit:

I see I misread - you meant for all of them. Yeah, thats about what I have just recently spent.

Started a rare run last night in my Hauler and 80k in my pocket, one return trip and I was able to purchase and upgrade a Cobra (40T, 4C FSD everything else D rated) :) pretty happy about that.

A couple more runs now and I'll be in a T6 (aka back where I was in beta!)

Sorry for being thick but what benefits do you get from upgrading your thrusters?

I assume the maneuverability during combat is a bit plus because at the moment I only use them for docking etc!

Nice one. I never really got into the rares run but I can see it is a good way of getting some easy creds :)

"Upgrading" to D = Least weight.
So highest jump range.

A = Higher top speed (and higher boosted speed) as well as increased agility.
On the likes of a Type 9, makes it a chore to dock vs OK to dock apparently.

Upgrading your power distributer means more power gets to your SYS/ENG/WEP bars, so can shoot for longer, boost more often, shields charge quicker.

Am not at my machine so can't check this in the outfitting section, but isn't this only correct if your ship's mass is under the FSD's optimal mass? D rated components are the lightest but cetainly not the strongest.

You know I was just thinking... this isn't actually like getting spoilers if you think about it... we're all sitting in some seedy space bar swapping tales over a drink. Any second now some kid's going to walk in with an old man looking for cheap passage somewhere...

If you are bored with the music but fancy some whilst on long treks....I am playing Tron Legacy soundtrack and it works really well (or at least for me) :)

FSD A rated of the highest class. (ofc) If you equip a lower class FSD you'll barely be able to jump out of the system!
For every other component, D is the lightest. Ship weighing less = More jump range.

No shields give more jump range than any of course... But lower class and D rated = bigger jump.
Basically the lower the mass the higher the jump range.

Have a play here when you get home / to a PC:
http://www.edshipyard.com

For example, I changed the Power Distribution from 7A to 6D - To allow me 1 jump on my trade route instead of 2.

One exception is the Power Plant.
Generally keep it at A rated as it dissipates heat quicker so you can get closer to a star to scoop, weapons don't overheat as quickly etc.
But can drop class of it quite easily, my max power plant is Class 7 but I have a 5A power plant as it gives me the power I need and is WAY better than a 7D one.

EDIT - This is ONLY considering jump distance.
For a trading vessel, jump distance is key, even if not jumping the max range, fuel costs will be lower.
If you want combat, then you'll want an A rated Power Dist of the max class and better thrusters etc.
