2015 Chilli Growers Thread

Not having much luck germinating these seeds so far. I put them straight into the peat pods, but only 1 has germinated so have now tried putting them in folded kitchen roll which I have had good results from in the past.

If that fails I only have like 2 seeds of each left... Might have to get one of those heated propagators from Aldi and do it properly.

EDIT: Anyone ever bought some compost from Aldi? £2.50 for 40 litres doesn't seem bad value if its any good.

if you're struggling germinating or have some questionable seeds I can send you some Aji Limon Seeds as the last guy I offered them too never contacted me.

They're yellow medium 30k-60k scoville and have a nice citrus note and i've found them to be nice all round chillies. They are dirt easy to grow and fruit very well. I have over 150 in my freezer and I used/gave away about another 150 from my 7 plants.

Also have some questionable Scotch bonnet seeds you are welcome too as well

Gah, thanks for the warning, i'll give that a miss then. Might be from the same company that makes Wilkos own brand stuff as that was rubbish as well. Can you recommend something? I think I just got a couple of growbags last time I grew chillis, but can't remember what brand they were now.

I used B&Q's Verve own brand compost and after breaking it up and pulling out any stray lumps its was ok.

80% peat free compost. Vermiculite and perlite 10% each. perfect for germinating and mix some more up for pottting on. all available for under a tenner in wilkos.
I have about 25 plants so far, way to many to be honest.
i have grown tepins, choc habs, reapers, hot wax, polobno and a few others.
looking good so far.

That would be great if you don't mind :). Just had a read up on them and it says they are resilient to cold weather which would be perfect for where I live as I plan to try and grow some outdoors this year.

Thanks, i'll have a look in Wilko for it. I don't mind paying a bit more to get something decent.

Trust me your address and I will get them posted out Tomorrow or Saturday

Sent one to you earlier on. I'll check back later and send again if it hasn't gone through. They sometimes end up in the junk folder for some reason.

Checked my mail and I have it. I'll get them posted out probably Saturday morning. I'll send a fair few Aji seeds so you have a good chance at germinating. They are very forgiving plants, I pretty much abused mine and I'm still swamped in chillies now. I will also send some untested Scotch bonnet seeds too if you fancy having a dabble at them.

@booyaka I got the Chocolate Habenero seeds you sent today. Thank you very much and also for the Basket of Fire seeds i wasn't expecting! As you sent absolutely loads i'll probably end up passing on the love to someone else too

no worries - the chocolate habs don't seem to be taking well for me. There is very little sign of life in the seeds at present, the basket of fire seeds are sprouting fine.

Just planted my seeds for this year: Naga Morich, 7 Pod 'Brain Strain', Fatalii, Devil's Tongue, Yellow Scotch Bonnet, Nagalah. All from scratch for the first time in ages (Last year I felt I had a smaller crop because the overwintered plants were late to get going).

Now I'm off to prune in my orchard.

Everything is up now, all the Jolokias and Infinities have germinated which is a darn sight more successful than previous years I've tried growing super hots.

Jalepenos, Cayennes and Habs are going to get repotted this weekend as they're hitting the top of the propogator. Bit earlier than I would have liked, would have preferred more leaves but needs must.

Awesome, thanks. I have tried to grow scotch bonnets in the past but they never fruited, so hopefully we get a good summer this year and i'll have more luck. Very interested to see how the Aji turn out.

I've packaged them up and their in my bag to drop in the post in the morning. Sending about 30-40 Aji's and about 10-20 Scotch Bonnets.

Made the silly mistake of extracting the seeds from the dried chillies and then rubbing my eyes and nose.... they are burning/tingling now

Edit Saturday: Posted :)

Bit of a random comment time. Bought some Original Source shower gel at the weekend, lemon and Chili and marketed as a "Wake up" shower gel.

This morning out of interest I checked the label to have it list the ingredients including "Capsicum Chinense (Habanero)"

I had one of those grow your own chilli bags last year which actually bore fruit and got me interested, moved it into its own pot and still going strong. The chillis were small but great for putting on pizza or mince dishes. Got another kit with a variety of chillis with pots etc for Christmas that I will do this year.

Still very small time stuff but stepping it up a bit!

That would certainly wake you up when you wash your danglies with it . the mint version is bad enough!

Seeds arrived safe and sound, thanks again. Put them in the damp towel straight away and they look to have grown in size, so looking good so far.

I have the mint one too and to be honest the lemon and chili one is nothing like the mint which is a bit diappointing :(

Anyway back on topic, happy they arrived and fingers crossed they germinate

C. Lanceolatum and C. Eximium seeds germinating, only one apiece so far. The C. Tovarii is still doing nothing! Pictures to follow soon.

Those Aji limon seeds have started germinating already .

Seems the heat from a Virgin media superhub is just right for germinating seeds lol. I put 2 foam packers on top of the air grill and then placed a plastic takeaway container with the damp kitchen roll inside and it seems to be working great. Not going to bother with the peat plugs again as they were a total failure and pretty expensive.

Nice, glad to see they are viable. I took them from some dried Aji's Friday night that have been in my window for 3 months slowly drying so im really happy they appear to be good seeds. Any news on the scotch bonnets?

I started mine in wet tissue last year then when they showed signs of life i planted them in ghetto plant pots lol. Got folks to save 2ltr bottles for me then chopped them in half and used the bottom half as mini plant pots.

The bonus is you can see the root growth through the clear bottles bottoms and you can see when they were starting to get root bound. I Then potted them into proper plant pots
