2015 Chilli Growers Thread

I'm interested in growing some chillies. Is it too late to find some seeds and start now?

If not, could someone please recommend something for someone who isn't particularly green fingered? :)

The Aji Limons are dead easy to grow and are very forgiving. If you Trust me you details I'll send you some seeds like I did for Mark A

I'm very tempted to have a go at growing chillis this year, but can't decide which to go for. Not looking for huge heat, just something with a bit of a kick and good flavour. Any suggestions?

I tried to over winter a few of my plants from last year. Anyone know when I should see some signs of life before I scrap them?

As long as they are warm, in light and fed/watered they should be showing signs now. My overwintering attrition rate has suddenly gone through the roof with ones that looked to be coming around suddenly deciding to stop and give up the ghost

1/7 Scoth Bonnets has survived and is doing well, ironically it is the "runt" plant from last year.
5/8 Aji Limons have survived and are now starting to throw out new branches aside from small leaves.

Might look at going for 2 new scotch bonnet, 4 choc habs and 3 basket of fire. Going to plant the majority of my seeds and sell them on the exchange portal at work

Again I cant say enough for the Aji Limon a nice everyday chili in my eyes, very forgiving and easy to grow, and fairly decent crop size.

If you want some i should have enough to send you and Hamster. Trust me your details

I think mine are dead then lol as they're not doing much, I'll plant some more seeds and give them a couple more weeks.

Cheers dude

Nice, glad to see they are viable. I took them from some dried Aji's Friday night that have been in my window for 3 months slowly drying so im really happy they appear to be good seeds. Any news on the scotch bonnets?

They are definitely viable. i put most of them in the damp tissue and almost all of them germinated. Bit of a waste not to plant them all but I wouldn't have room for so many so picked out the ones with the longest root.

The Scotch bonnets are also germinating. One started not long after the Aji seeds, which was surprising as they took like 2 weeks last time I tried them.

Anyone tried using home made compost for their chillis they grow outside? I might try it on a couple of them just to see if it makes any difference.

I have 9 or so germinated now, I don't know if I'm just impatient but they seem so slow to do anything more, been sitting there for a few weeks under my lights with just the seed leaves, they will surprise me and start shooting up at some point no doubt.

I also had a major problem getting the reapers to germinate, of the 6 I tried only one has germinated and it looks dodgy! I've panicked and ordered a few plants from worldofchillies which will ship in April. All in all I don't feel like I've had the amazing start like I did last year, all seeds germinated and I ended up with just under 50 healthy quality plants, which was far too many and far too much work during the year but it was impressive.

At which point do you move from small 3" pots to larger or outdoor greenhouse etc. Some of my initial seeds are now around 4/5" inches tall with 4 or so leaves on them?

They are still sitting on my heated propagator in single small pots. seem to be growing fast!

Thanks... that would be much appreciated. Details sent.

Once you see the roots poking through the holes in the bottom of the pots you can move them to the full sized pots. Some people like to go up in pot sizes, but I didnt see any difference just going from a small 9cm pot straight to the large pots.

Need to wait for the last frost date before moving to a greenhouse and harden them off before moving them out.

They are quite slow until they get a few leaves, then they rocket up with enough light and a good sized pot.

I'm a bit late to the sowing party but I've ordered a few different seed types that I'll get in the propagator as soon as I receive them this week. Fingers crossed they'll catch up!
