290X + ROG Swift = flickering and black screen

Guys, in desperate need of some help here.

I have a 290X MSI LE and a ROG Swift monitor. If I select 120Hz at 1440P, I get flickering before it goes to a black screen. I bought a Startech lead under advisement but that hasn't helped. If I try to play COD:AW, I just get a black screen and changing the user cfg to 1920x1080 doesn't help either. I get the same with 3DMark Firestrike and I am getting rather ****** off in honesty.

Has anyone else experienced this? works fine at 60Hz and 1440P but the tearing is frankly putting me off playing any games and V-Sync isn't working properly either (still getting tearing and lots of stutter). What the hell am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Gregster honestly not sure what the problem is. my startech works.

I have an adapter that works but occasionally flickers every now and then. I can get this sent out to you free of charge to tie you over until you get sorted? Let me know mate. (It is however a mini DP port adapter to full size DP)

what length is the cable greg ? I had a black screen only a couple of times with my swift so i swapped out the cable that came with it for a Lindy and it cured that.

Disclaimer: Wild guess incoming.

Maybe the AMD freesync functionality in the drivers is somehow interfering with the GSync module in the monitor?
If it is at all possible, try disabling the Freesync functionality in the catalyst drivers.

Cheers for the help guys. The lead is a 2 meter lead (needs to be that length as a minimum). I don't have a mini DP connector on this card but that is a very nice gesture Watling and appreciated.

I also don't have any Freesync options. The previous cable worked fine at 1440P and 144Hz on my Titans. I am starting to pull what little left of my hair out.

Send the cable back they're all the same.

See what happens when you go AMD ? :D

Just a thought and I'm not 100% sure how this works, but before you had the titans, I asume gsync was enabled ? Did you need to disable gsync before isntalling the AMD card ? Possibly the module is still enabled in some way ?

I did disable G-Sync, so I could see a fair comparison between the two (Also used DDU prior to installing the 290X). I didn't change from 144Hz to 60Hz though, as I was expecting to be able to run 120Hz :(

Other than this, the card is sweet and no complaints but this is starting to get to me now. 60Hz gaming is tearing badly and no idea why it is just as bad but with added stutter when I use V-Sync.

Gotta go to work but appreciate any help on this issue and will try anything when I finsish at 10 tomight.

The massive limitation of a monitor with a singular input doesn't help.

Running dual display could benefit while trying to chase down the fault.

'Other than this...'

:D

Sounds like a driver issue to be honest. I'd try a different set perhaps to see if it resolves it. If not all I guess you can do is wait till the new driver comes.

From another thread. This guy got a reply from AMD on the issue.

Hi, Daniel. We have this monitor in our lab and took a look at the firmware of the electronics for the display. Our analysis reveals that this monitor’s firmware is not compliant with a VESA certification called Coordinated Video Timing (CVT). The CVT timing standard provides a common framework for a graphics card and monitor to reliably communicate, especially at high refresh rates or resolutions (e.g. 144Hz). Failure to follow the standards set forth in VESA CVT specification can cause interoperability and visual errors, like the one your are experiencing now, or common errors like “DisplayPort link failure.”

Unfortunately there is not much we can do on our end to resolve this problem, as it is a firmware issue with this particular display.

Sincerely,

Robert

Some people took there monitors back and got another swift and it worked fine at 120hz and some even at 144hz. It really does seem like a hit or a miss with these swift monitors on the AMD side and in some cases even on the Nvidia side.

Why does it work OK for nVidia then?

In the thread i am reading a guy with a 780ti and gtx760 are having the same issues.

Yes, this IS a fault with the monitor. Multiple Nvidia and AMD users have the same problem, flickering at 144hz and many at 120hz as well. In many of those situations sending the monitor back for a replacement with zero other changes got a working screen.

This is a Asus Swift problem, not AMD and not directly Nvidia. It could be a g-sync issue, hardware/QC wise, or it could be something Asus have done. Possibly random panel problems themselves but considering G-sync modules are new and tn/144hz tech has been fine up till now it's least likely to be a panel issue than Asus or Nvidia troubles.

Thanks for all the help guys and I will try that fix tonight Mr Pain.

@DM - No, just no! The monitor has been perfect for many many months and never skipped a beat. Now if it results in me staying at 60Hz, so be it but this is not a faulty monitor and I told you this before. Now unless you have any helpful advice, please stay out.

Do you know anyone close that happens to have another 290x you could try. I have seen one guy having the problem with a 290x which was fine on other monitors but not on a swift. He tried another PC with a 290x in it which played fine on the swift. He then took the 290x out of the PC that worked and tried it in the first PC where it also worked. So on this occasion the original 290x did not like the monitor. It's a very random problem that you may never fix tbh as quit simply your card might just not play ball with your monitor where as another 290x could be fine.

The swift just seems to be really touchy like an over hormonal woman.

If all else fails, I will put up with it for now and hopefully, the new drivers Will sort it. I am hoping it is just COD:AW and firestrike that black screens though and if so, I can live with that.
