I think the point is that they're attempting to make it a fashion item.. high end designer with a price to match.

However the number of sales of apps is directly related to the number of sales of their hardware. Make that hardware too expensive to 80% of people and you're in for a serious problem - no apps, no user base and no revenue.

Exactly this, I find it quite bizarre that anyone could contemplate spending thousands on a watch that literally just tells you the time, and in a lot of cases doesn't even look that nice. It's really just a status symbol

This in comparison costs nothing (depending on the model) and offers a lot more in terms of functionality

Indeed. Even the most expensive Edition configuration is peanuts compared to some watches (sorry, time pieces) - I just saw an article the other day that gave a list of 10 that were more than most super cars. If there's a market for those, there's a market for the Edition, and with it being limited edition that's even more incentive to own one to differentiate being part of the haves v.s. the have nots.

I don't think the pricing of the Sport is particularly crazy - people paid more for iPads which were 'just big iPod Touches' and a new product category. Apple have got you by the short and curlies for the straps but that's always been the case with accessories on new product lines until 3rd parties have time to get their hands on them and give you a cheaper alternative.

From the looks of it then its going to be hard to replace the strap.

Ive got very mixed feelings about its looks.
From all the pictures of the watch it looks really nice but when I've seen it on wrists it looks too big square and horrible.

Ive got an LG g watch R and a lot of people have commented saying its a nice watch and that's before they even see its a smart watch.

Is the apple watch more useful then any other smart watch on the market? Not really.

I use mine for notifications and also as a quick check when I'm using GPS and riding to see if I'm on the right path

I'll be buying a LG G Watch R, and an associated android handset next to pair with it. Apple are taking the pee with the pricing of this thing and it isn't even all that great imo.

Had apple hardware for three years but bored of the same old same old and the watch is just a cash cow for them. Strap prices are frankly stupid as is the overall watch price. The G Watch R is a lovely looking piece at far far less cost.

No. My smartphone does for me and no smartwatch will ever get to being better than my Seamaster Planet Ocean.

lol, that's the second time you've made that comment... you do realise that your PO cost you thousands of pounds and is a pretty common, mass produced, vastly inaccurate timepiece? Yes, it looks nice and all, but you're paying through the nose for something that is essentially a piece of jewellery that doesn't tell the time particularly well. I own a PO myself, but I'm not kidding myself that it's essentially a status symbol rather than anything amazingly unbeatable.

I'd wager an Apple watch would be more accurate as a timepiece, more robust, vastly cheaper and judging by the voting on this thread, more rare!

Love gadgets, haven't got any intention of buying a smart watch, far too much overlap with phone functionality I already have. I haven't researched these at all but there isn't a single use case where I've wished to have similar functionality that's on my phone on my wrist.

But when people spend a grand plus on a normal watch they aren't buying it knowing its going to be absolutely useless in a few years time which is exactly what first gen smart watches are going to be. They buy it because it will last.

imo the battery technology isnt there yet for smart watches to be as useful as they could be - pretty sure in 5 years time when they last a few days from a charge and arent chained to your phone to be useful it'll be a different scenario but from what I saw Apple arent doing anything different at all this time round from the others.
Premature technology.

Am I the only one who thinks it's an ugly watch?

It looks awful in my opinion and it's hilarious that with the gold ones they charge thousands more if you don't want a cheap plastic strap with it.

No not even if they were £50.

For years everyone has been quick to point to the smartphone for why they don't wear a watch while scoffing at people with an expensive watch. Now they need an expensive 'watch' that lasts a few hours between charges. And people will buy this? You can't make it up.

Looks ****ing ugly too.

Last night after watching the keynote I actually did want one, after not being at all bothered initially. But 24 hours later I think I've regained my sanity and once again, other than the "oho shiny", I really can't see the point of it.
