Camera is a bit rubbish too, HTC again say its non final software which is possible if the reviewers have reviewed the phones a while back while under an NDA. I don't know why HTC wouldn't just wait till the software was fixed and in all honesty if the software is bad so close to the launch then something is clearly very wrong.

I really hope they sort the issues out and the heat but if its another hardware issue there is nothing they can do. LG and Sony are using the 810 in their next flagship phones, LG has one in the Gflex 2 which runs really hot even though its throttled to try and prevent it, I think the current crop of phones will be a failure for battery life (S6 aside) with the combined power issues and heat which will further degrade the battery compounding the issue, also no replaceable battery in the M8 if it does get really bad which is a bummer for those on a 2 year contract if it does fail as HTC warranty is just 1yr.

I hope Im wrong though and everything turns out fine.

What's more interesting is the performance scores while refrigerated, kinda show's that the CPU is throttling as it gets hot which is a shame.

It definitely seems as if HTC have got a lot wrong with this phone but certain things have improved. The button placement is now sensible on the side, ultrapixels on the front is definitely a smart move and of course going for a more traditional camera on the rear SHOULD have worked out but it looks like it hasn't.

Surely they can only enhance this through software so much and not to that much more of an extent. It's a shame really in my eyes but I would hope they will come back with a feature rich M10 next year.

Im tempted to wait for the M10 myself. This was the only phone I was interested in this year.

I can look past the camera but the battery life needs to be good. I feel like this isn't htc's fault. Its the processor which they didnt really have a choice on but its a bit of a big issue.

And they cheaped out on the screen?!

Nail in coffin.

M8 VS M9

Oh yeah I forgot about the battery life...I mean only just better than the Nexus 5 which has a pretty bad battery life and around 2 hours behind the M8 in most scenarios.

Increasing the capacity doesn't always mean increased battery life. I'm immensely disappointed as I really did want an M9 but the more and more I read the more I was turned off towards it.

IIRC they had some something in the init.d that would boost contrast levels to fake OLED style contrast, hoping its just that, that has changed and not the panel.

You can boost contrast but you can't fake black levels and viewing angles.

From the above review, the new panel is a definite downgrade. Not Nexus 5 levels of terrible but worse than the M8 nonetheless.

The screen is supposed to be exactly the same unit as used on the M8 so that very well could be software fixable.

Seems like the story of HTC's life :p

It's either a duff unit or a different panel. I can't see it being fixed. Colour calibration + white point yes, but not black levels or VA.

I still have the HTC One M7. I'm over due an upgrade so could get the M9 but it doesn't seem worth it. It would be like upgrading from a 970 to a 980. Better absolutely, but not £43 a month for 2 years better. I'm keeping my M7 and will drop to a £10 sim only deal and bank the rest.

I had the HTC Desire before my M7 and before that a Sharp GX10 before that which I used for about 7 to 8 years ;p probably won't keep my M7 for that long though, there will probably be an indisputable reason to upgrade before 7 years. Like a hologram display or something.

Thinking the same now unless a nice nexus that isnt the size of my face comes out.

Massively uninspiring release season

I have to admit I'm usually a bit htc fan, however the more I read the less reason I see to move from my M8. htc seem to have gone backwards again. When will they ever learn, why don't the wait a bit longer between releases and perfect a good polished product, after all they are marketing it at the top end :(:(

The display is a few shades of grey. I don't know what HTC were thinking, but the review is most definitely damning. If HTC protest that the review unit is pre-production then why on earth are they supplying reviewers with pre-production models.

HTC have a long way to go if they are to fix the problems and employ some nifty software tricks to stop the M9 from overheating.

LG are having heating issues with the G Flex 2 and that's after the device is programmed to throttle aggressively.

Any device that comes out with the SD810 is basically flawed, OEMs need to start looking elsewhere for chipsets as Qualcomm have made an almighty mess this year.
