What do you mean by competitive? Are you intending to race on the bike? Or just keep up on group rides?

The key differences between race, endurance and cyclocross road frames lies with the geometry. Race will have you further down, more aero and as a result, faster. Cyclocross bikes put you in more of an upright position so you have more control, and it's easier to quickly mount/dismount as you need to. Now the differences aren't so great that you're going to be completely unable to ride at the same speeds, but they will have an effect so it's important to think about what the bike will be primarily used for. That and try to find somewhere you could try out a few of the bikes you have in mind so you can see the differences for yourself.

What bike lube do you guys use? Gonna give my bike a full clean and de-lube on the weekend as need to change the inner tube.

That's an interesting reason to do a full bike service but heyho... :p

You'll need different lubes for different parts. Regular grease for lots of bits, carbon grease for some parts (if you have carbon parts) and a chain lube for the chain. GT85 is always handy to have to. And finally some kind of powerful degreaser.

Well, I haven't given it a 'full' clean for a good few months now :p

Won't be giving it a full service though - probably just a hefty clean, won't re-grease everything just yet.

By competitive I mean racing with my friends over 20 miles average. Not official racing more just keeping up with bravado.

If I move into more group riding, being able to keep up without buying a new bike would be great. Swapping to 23 tyres wold be done for road runs I guess?

25mm will do you better for road riding.

A CX bike isn't going to slow you down enough to matter compared to relative fitness so don't worry about that side of things.

Has he even set a time there? If not, then he could start easy by setting a goal of beating my time round there :p

Aiming high.:p

Why not set a goal of beating my time around RP? ;)

The usual for me ;) but seriously, if t RP was local I'd be able to get a good time around it, now a 15 mile trip to it means that I don't get the time to ride it at all and when ever I get a day for some proper riding, RP is quite low on my list! :)

I swear you don't live far from it? ;) but no, no time there yet.. Maybe I'll go there one nice summer morning and do a couple of laps but I'm not expecting to get near shamrock in a few laps! :)

Stick some 25 mm slicks on it and you'll be fine, the frame doesn't look massively up right either, and you can always slam the stem if you want to compensate.

Somebody from my club recently had his nice TT bike and mountain bike stolen from his shed in Warrington and he was distraught. Its a serious problem in Warrington. Police told him they think there are four organised gangs in Warrington alone, stealing to order.

Grim and depressing. You can't own anything nice these days.

i'm willing to put some extra towards it

Nice bike, ok spec but mechanical discs mean it's not as good as you *could* get...

Revenio 4, Discs (HyRD - think they're better than mechanical), SRAM Rival 22 (SRAM equivilent to 105?), several sizes and £1149. alu frame, carbon fork, 700x25mm tyres.

Maverick Comp (same spec as above), various sizes and same price £1149. Steel frame, CrMO fork, 700x35mm tyres.

I was mostly looking for racey frames with disc's and good groupsets around the £1200 mark. If you're not set on discs then you can get a bit more for your money frame and groupset wise... I'm riding this currently and love it!

Does your insurance money have to all be spent on a bike or have they allowed some to replace your bag/wallet/GoPro etc too?

What's your time?

Did an 18:44 clockwise at the beginning of March, apparently 8th out of c.2000 this year.

Shots fired! :D

competitive to what? you can't enter road races if you have discs, but with road tyres and a carefully set up position, ratio for ratio, a cross bike shouldn't be any slower than a road bike really

[Damien] used to rival some of the best riders I know on a cross bike, and was formidable once he got his road bike. Besides, isn't there some British Cycling rule about how all clubs have to have someone who turns up on a hybrid held together with mud and spanks everyone? Some people will ride well no matter what bike they're on.

a club I used to ride with now and then had someone who used to turn up on a knobbly-tyred MTB and do turns at 20mph+

Following accusations that I'm slow and don't push myself (harsh but fair :p) I thought I'd go out and give it a bit of welly. Nothing at all earth shattering but meh, it's cold, it's dark, it's early in the season, I'm ill, excuses, excuses...

I had a bit of a near death experience thanks to some clagnut who thought it was a good idea to drive at me with full beam headlights on an unlit road. I could barely see a thing, so I just slowed down, and I remember thinking that if the white line was on my right then I shouldn't be in his path, and if it was quite close to me, then I shouldn't hit the kerb on the left... I shouted some abuse, though I'm sure the driver didn't hear, so I probably just disturbed the local residents, whoops.
