The *Official* Eve Online Thread

Awesome :) what were the highlights of the event for you? Did you go on the legendary pub crawl?

I'm considering going next year would be cool to meet up with any OCUK peeps out there also!

Had a great time seeing a lot of mails and making some new ones. Really enjoyed some of the announcements, the structure stuff is going to be awesome. The Worlds Collide event was exciting and it has me already psyched for Alliance Tournament later in the year too!

Did the pub crawl, but good god I felt rough the day after. It's a good way to meet people if you aren't already out with a group and you get easy access to Devs to chat. Think I missed pretty much all but one of the talks on the following day due to the hangover... (insert sick smiley here)

Sorry for the silly question, but due to the age and size of this game now, is it possible as a new player to actually get on with this? Or would it all be to big now etc?
You'll be fine, just accept that you won't be flying Capitals and similar any time soon and fly around smaller things and have much more fun than they do anyway ;) After a few months of gametime the majority of the skillpoint advantage just gives experienced players more choices in ships, rather than just giving them stronger abilities.

Mine and trade
Trade is probably one of the most stand out features of Eve really, pretty much everything is player created and you can do all sorts of level of trading. Whether it be supplying smaller areas from Hubs, doing huge bulk buys at low prices or manipulating the markets by being cunning.

As Karateyid said, big thumbs up towards RvB or Brave. Particularly the latter :)

As above there is a really good tutorial system. If you like mining etc then may I suggest having a look at the tutorials and then think if you would like mining with a little more 'conflict'. Jakspyder and I are in a Corp that sells boosters (ingame narcotics) and we mine the gas that is used for them. Now I think Jakspyder would not get too cross if I were to say the corp is possibly too small to support someone completely fresh to maybe how much we would like to be able to do things or we would like things done for us. A helpful bunch for sure and great people but not always someone online and active.

You have two real paths into mining: small frigates - Venture and then Prospect. These are really good for mining "gas". And then for actual asteroid ore and a few other things you have the mining barges then leading onto Exhumers. Some people (call themselves CODE) hate people mining and will attempt to kill anyone they do find mining. Now of course EVE being EVE they most likely at leadership level don't hate mining at all they probably manufacture mining barges and the ships used to kill them and just want turnover.

As for finding stuff out: http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Main_Page

There is a section there related to Station Trading and also Region to Region Trading. There are some good video guides too. There are also NPC "courier missions" where you run stuff from one place to another.

However, like I said you could consider the corp Jakspyder are in, or something similar, as we mine the gas, make the drugs and then trade and deal them across New Eden.

I've added a link here for a trial: https://secure.eveonline.com/trial/?invc=04b43af4-5b62-4291-b768-57f82df3c415&action=buddy

If you use that and then subscribe in any way then CCP would give me a Plex (for the referral) which I will give to you. You can sell that for 800 million give or take. Or use it. See that bloke above he's only offering 400 million - so he'd make 400 million! This leads to two essential EVE rules - don't trust anyone and don't fly a ship you can't afford to replace! Sorry Dlknight. :D

+1 to all this stuff.

Gas mining is actually great money, as is drug dealing and quite accessable to new players. That said id hazard around say 2 months into the game being a better time to join. started in the corp just 1 week old and found my initial experience frustrating as I felt like i couldnt contribute much. That said the venture and prospect ships mentioned didnt exist (crucial to gas mining)

Es and Whizz (our corp) is small and not 100% active for certain. You need ot be willing to learn and make your own content, however its a very unknown aspect of the game that still somehow remains shrouded in mystery. I felt it was an awesome way to learn eve in a hostile environment rather than starting out somewhere safe in highsec where bad habbits are learned.

In my first 2 months I made a few billion isk (way more than I could possibly spend) and I was meeting some very high skilled high placed players conducting drug deals. And some very low placed scumbags too :D

Its a great way to build a contact network within the game that otherwise would be near impossible. and Learning to live in lowsec/nullsec hostile space and how to move and operate without being killed every 10 seconds is a good thing.

Code are only an issue if you're an afk miner or like... an idiot lol. (P.S everyone starts out as an idiot)

Personally quitting the game, very reluctantly, something I invested quite a bit of what little time I had to play eve with recently just been chopped out the game in a very off hand manner, due to some borderline exploitative use in edge cases, and second time that an issue has blown up with the devs just not responding at all which just doesn't cut it for me - don't want to quit but I'm not going to be taken for a mug or play player v dev.

Maun- If you do have a go let us all know your ingame name and I am sure we will all try and help a fellow OCUKer in game. I know I will.

Whatever you end up doing you can't go wrong learning how to survive in the different aspects of EVEs space - highsec (policed so violence will get consequences but not stopped), lowsec (crimes will get recorded but not policed), nullsec (anything goes), Wormholes (anything goes and no idea if anyone is in there with you).

These guys here will get you upto speed and help you out and are genuinely awesome and teaching you how to survive in hostile environments: https://gate.eveonline.com/Corporation/Open University of Celestial Hardship

Sorry you are quitting Rroff - I've read a lot of your posts on the Eve forums and I think you make a very valuable contribution to the community.

PS Can we have your stuff :p

I was only joking. But please keep all your stuff. I many years ago used to run a Wormhole corp (back when they came out) and over time it all dissolved as it was work based and our engagements meant less and less activity we all called it quits. But I came back in the end, ended up borrowing a massive sum from someone I knew to get a incursion ready character - ground like mad with that to pay off the debt etc etc. I now have managed to buy back all the original characters and thank god none of them ever went near goon corps.

So my suggestion keep em mothballed don't quit for me there has only ever been one game better than EVE and that was SWG and that got killed and I still play the Emu all these years later. EVE is going from strength to strength atm I think and sometimes with EVE it's just best to do something completely different. I know I love it now no pressure, I do bugger all to help the corp leadership and they are cool with that they understand when you've done it all before and you aren't a megalomaniac then its appeal does wane somewhat.

If you do go I understand I did the same with SWG - the NGE just killed the game I loved and I troll anything SOE or Smedley still to this day because I am mature like that!

Edit: Is it fighters that has annoyed you?

Rroff, the edgecase you refer to is all that can be found in nullsec if you roam in small ships these days. It's just utter **** to have in the game at the moment, the ability to assign drones to a cheap ship giving it 3000dps+ that can be easily applied with nearly no risk is just utterly, utterly broken.

The reason the devs probably haven't replied is because absolutely no-one has been able to provide a reason for it to be in game apart from "because it always used to be"

I'm not for "skynet" in any shape or form (I've been on the receiving end of it myself) - spent month supporting the calls for addressing it - demonstrating just how broken it is i.e.
I (and others) also provided solid ways to address it without wholesale ripping out the feature and provided reasons for why general fighter delegation should stay (its spread over 5-6 different threads over several months but its all on the eve online forums).

CCP's entire handling of it has been completely off hand and now they've decided they can't even get fighter assist (on grid) working leaving fighters basically useless for anything due to the long lock time of the carrier in combination of the long lock times of the fighters themselves with the recent scan res change.

Edit: Is it fighters that has annoyed you?

Its the straw/camels back thing but its the most recent along with things like fozzie's wh mass/jump range thing where they just ignored all the feedback and the approach they are taking towards T3 changes.

While I think the devs certainly handle some things poorly, the dev player cooperation and involvement is SO SO SO far ahead of any other game out there that it really is hard to take issue for me anyway.

The problem is the players the devs actually listen to and the player bodies that the devs are represented in. I find it no shock that the ability to fit a 100AB was not changed on the Ishtar and that heavy drones weren't touched either.

I think it's fair to say though that drones are a broken mechanic across the board and we can trace most of that back to phoebe. I am a massive drone user but even I admit they are broken at the moment but on the plus side I reckon I am one of the few who uses a commandship on grid because Medium MJD and sentries and links is too good to turn down.

but on the plus side I reckon I am one of the few who uses a commandship on grid because Medium MJD and sentries and links is too good to turn down.

I've been away for a year and must have missed this. My favourite ships were Command ships, when were Medium MJD added??? This makes them even more awesome! SO many idea already springing to mind in the few minutes since reading that....
I think it might be time to start playing again...

Quite a bit ago now but Eos being a sentry ship and the medium MJD is just too good as you don't compromise your links at all with the fits. It's a really good ship I think and I am shocked it's not used more. You can still fit it with heavies but tbh then there is no need for the MJD and I prefer the mobility of that option.

I suspect the relatively high training requirement is part of the reason, its moderate speed and larger sigs tends to reduce its attractiveness for a lot of people compared to alternatives. Quite like it myself.

Yep the speed was a severe issue before but that is mitigated now by the ability to jump 100km away at a moments notice.

anyone saw the Eve Valkyrie trailer. Just signed up for the alpha.

Yep, it looks better than I thought it would but I still see it as an unnecessary distraction financially.

From looking at gameplay footage of Valkyrie it has a bit of a descent vibe could be quite a blast for people who enjoyed those games. A little underwhelming from my perspective for flying fighters but in its own right looked more fun than I thought it would be.

You know, I'd not even considered an out and out combat fit Eos with links, sentries and a MJD... *goes shopping*

Having played Valkyrie. Can confirm it's full of awesome :D

You know, I'd not even considered an out and out combat fit Eos with links, sentries and a MJD... *goes shopping*

I use the following:

High:

2 x Medium Unstable Power Fluctuator
Armoured Link: Damage Control 2
Armoured Link: Passive Defence 2
Armoured Link: Rapid Repair 2
1 x Drone Link Augmentor 2

Medium:

MJD
1 x Federation Omni Tracking Link
1 x 10MN Analog Booster Rockets
1 x Sensor Booster 2 with Targeting Range Script

Low:

2 x Drone Damage Augmentors
2 x Imperial Navy Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane
1 x Imperial Navy Armor Explosive Hardener
1 x Corpum B-Type Medium Armor Repairer

Rigs:

2 x Medium Trimark Armor Pump

Drones:

Warden 2s (will hit to 511 DPS out to lock range of 130KM)

You don't really need to use the repairer at all because you've got such a good lock range and you can just triangulate everywhere.

Not a roaming ship but looks canny forgave camping near home.. New t3 destroyers are great for roams. - pack of them are nasty. Atm prefer the confessor over the svipul.. Hull tanking gallante version will be interesting.
