NAS as a replacement for Cloud Drive

My wife and I both use Amazon Cloud Drive Photos on our phones (Android) to store videos / pictures we've taken. Currently sitting at about 50GB worth. It auto syncs etc as you would expect.

Are there any NAS systems that would suffice as a replacement for this? I'd rather store the data at home than pay Amazon £40 a year.

one big difference is that the cloud is off site and in the event of a break in where they steal all your computers and NAS drive, you would have lost everything

I would keep my own off-site backups of these I think, but it is a good point.

I do both.

I use Amazon Cloud Drive for photo's as it's unlimited free storage as part of a Prime subscription.

I also have a nas, a Synology DS213j and that can back up to the cloud (onedrive/google drive etc).

Anyway NAs units are great unless you get burgled, suffer a fire or any number of things that can and do happen.

I decided sometime ago that my photo's also needed to be offsite just incase, as in reality it's not expensive.

realstically how often have you had burglaries/fires/floods which destroyed your computers?

I think you'll find the biggest risk to your data is human error/malware/hardware failure. Nas backups are good because you can take an entire image snapshot of your harddrive.

Cloud backup are good for your most important files. But in the event of a hardware failure - you will have to still spend a weekend installing your OS and reinstalling all your software and reconfiguring your software.

My recommendation is to keep both. I have a home based business so I do the following.

1) keep dropbox backup of important files.
2) keep a NAS hard drive backup
3) keep a external hard drive storing the same files as the dropbox in a fireproof safe.

N.b. my fireproof safe and NAS drives are secured on using kensignton lock.

i use 2 synology nas's for this one at my home and one at my work (2 different places for max safety). If you don't want to lose something always make sure you have all bases covered
