whats the best GPU do you guys think will run well without being CPU bottle necked on a i7 920 @ 3.6? (1080p 120hz)
i have a Gigabite windforce 3 7950 @ 1100 core and having pre ordered GTA 5 im starting to think a GPU upgrade could serve me well, i will be trying the game on my 7950 before i buy another card but im expecting to have to turn a lot of gfx features down quite a bit,
i dont have the funds for a complete system overhaul and i dont want to waste money on a card that would be overkill for the rest of my system

just get a 290 none x version
should serve you well with that cpu overclocked. and the resolution you will be at.

or if you want to save some money. get a 285....

I had an MSI 970 G1 running perfectly well in my i7 930 system. No bottlenecks when you have the CPU slightly tweaked. I wouldn't recommend a 970 since it gave me micro-stuttering probs if I wanted AA in any games. The CPU/GPU combo worked perfectly well otherwise. I'm currently at no 158 on the Heaven benchmarks.

I suggest a 980 if you have the cash (£450) but if you are an AMD fan then a 290X will be an excellent choice and the best price/performance for the money.

any gpu except the titan x maybe. Of course it will depend on the games you play but that cpu should still be good enough to power most single gpu.

I have an i7 930 @ 4ghz and currently using a gigabyte 780 3gb... runs everything I've tried at 1080p :)

If it was me I'd probably pick up that 780ti for 250 if it's still on offer on the ocuk website :D

the 780ti does look pretty tempting, any idea what % increase it would have over a 7950 as an average?
i think at £450 the 980 is out of my league, i heard the 290x runs hot?? not happy with the 970 having some gimped Vram issues either tbh

Those posts above should help you :) ... £250 for a 780ti is a steal in my eyes I think you would struggle to pick one up 2nd hand for that price :D

thanks for the suggestions guys, il wait till i can play the game on my current rig and see how things pan out, maybe il be happy for the moment with what ive got? although unlikely :).. not gonna know till this games released,
but i think buget wise a Xeon chip dropped into my x58 mobo + a 780ti is likely to give me best bang for buck

I think it's very bad advice some people on this forum are giving.

The 780ti is not a better buy than the 970. It's older(er) hat. And will not have access to the same DX12 support that the 900 series has/will get.

For example Voxel Global Illumination Technology (VXGI) which is a 900 series 'feature', is actually part of the DX12 spec. I don't think the 700 series supports this.

Also being newer, it will have a longer period of driver optimisations and will hold it's sell on value. Not to mention it's got a full 1Gb of Vram more. (Even if it is split between 500Mb fast and 500Mb slow) This is up to a 1200p resolution however.

Both cards wont cut it at 1440p. You will need two if you expect high IQ, and the 3Gb on the 780ti will bottleneck and the 3.5Gb limitation on the 970 will also be an issue. (Although this is internet here say)

Also the 970 will run cooler and quiter.

You are contradicting yourself.

Whilst I agree that a 970 would be a better purchase than a 780TI I'd argue that at 1440p you do not need 2 cards for high IQ.
All the games I currently play I use max settings. The only setting I turn down is AA and I can still easily use 2x and often 4x which at 1440p is all you need. Yes, some games that are out will not run at the highest settings @ 1440p with a 780TI or 970 but there are only a few of them.

This is off topic though seeing at he OP doesnt run a 1440p monitor, I just dont understand why people always dismiss single card solutions for 1440p...
