Best GPU to go with an i7 920 @ 3.6?

For example Voxel Global Illumination Technology (VXGI) which is a 900 series 'feature', is actually part of the DX12 spec. I don't think the 700 series supports this.

Where'd you get this info from? Everything I've seen says it supported back a few versions.. maybe 400 series or something like that.

I just mentioned 1440p to cover bases. As someone will pop up and say '970 stutter fest at 1440p'.

If your at 1080p then 970 all the way.

Voxel Global Illumination Technology (VXGI) is a Nvidia DX12 tech. In as far as I know from info around the web it's supported only by the 900 series and up. I could be wrong, but I think this is the case.

I also have a feeling it's part of the DX12 spec, as I remember seeing some slides with a break down of what will be covered by the AMD/Nvidia cards and VXGI was on that list.

Could be talking complet b* as well, but this is just my take on the info I have read. :p

It's far less of a gamble buying a 970 than it is a 780ti at this point in time, with a new API round the corner when no one really knows what to expect.

I installed a 970 into my brothers PC recently, with an identical cpu and clock to yours, and it's a big improvement from the 560 he was running.

Everything I tried ran as sweet as a nut, great card, if you can get past the 3.5/.5GB issue.

whats the best GPU do you guys think will run well without being CPU bottle necked on a i7 920 @ 3.6? (1080p 120hz)
i have a Gigabite windforce 3 7950 @ 1100 core and having pre ordered GTA 5 im starting to think a GPU upgrade could serve me well, i will be trying the game on my 7950 before i buy another card but im expecting to have to turn a lot of gfx features down quite a bit,
i dont have the funds for a complete system overhaul and i dont want to waste money on a card that would be overkill for the rest of my system

Your 7950 has 3GB VRAM already.

If you are going to spend money to upgrade it, I'd make sure the card you get has at least 4GB of RAM.

290/290x is your best bet.

It's been rumoured that GTA5 will use ridiculous amounts of VRAM, we'll get to see soon, though may be worth holding out for the release date, to see what it actually uses.

Would be nothing worse than 'upgrading' to a 780TI 3GB or 970 3.5GB and seeing the game use 4GB+ at 1080P for example.

What are these x5650 cpu's like ? Do they compare to the Devils Canyon ? If it's just for gaming I thought the 6 cores were pretty pointless as they don't use all the cores ?

My i7 930 still seems pretty decent , so I was just thinking of saving my money and upgrading full system in a year or 2 ?

thanks for the suggestions guys, il wait till i can play the game on my current rig and see how things pan out, maybe il be happy for the moment with what ive got? although unlikely :).. not gonna know till this games released,
but i think buget wise a Xeon chip dropped into my x58 mobo + a 780ti is likely to give me best bang for buck

Yeah that is exactly what I'd do ... although I don't know how long the 780ti is going to be at 250 on ocuk :)

I ran a similar configuration and faced the same dilemna, last upgrade on my i7 930 was from 5770 to 6950 and SSD + additional memory.
Held on an upgrade to 970 after release to see what AMD would counter with... Got bored waiting for 390x and picked up a 8gb 290x 3 weeks ago.
Main reason for 290x is due to planned upgrade to 4k sometime soon and supposedly performs OK at this resolution (8gb selected should I decide to crossfire to help meet demands of 4k).
Upgrade went well and the card performs excellently in Elite & Star Citizen @ 1440, it does get quite warm though (max 84c).
The discussion in this thread did make me pull the trigger today on a CPU upgrade to a x5650 I'd picked up last year but never got round to installing. Seems to have worked and knocked a firestrike bench from 8790 to 9730.
