WD Black or Seagate Barracuda?

The WD Black is the better drive, Barracudas are acceptable but not much else, they have a worryingly high failure rate in comparison to the other major players.

The latest version of the WD Black is likely to be the best version yes.

What would the usage scenario be for the drive?

I'd rather have an SSD tho.

SSD's aren't appropriate for *every* usage scenario though, hence my asking of what his will be. :)

Might turn out that an SSD may be more suited, or a WD Red, or even a Green, or a Purple!

I get that. A lot of people default to the Black cause it was "fastest thing ever in 2007 innit" and they forget that time has moved on.

Just had a 500gb Barracuda fail few weeks ago only lightly used over 2 years. Would prefer to buy Samsung drives if they were being developed instead will be Western Digital for my next purchase.

Another vote for the WD Black. As a long time Seagate user, the Barracudas are fast and cheap, but they fail lots and Seagate's customer service is poor. It's not worth the hassle compared to spending a bit more for a WD.

After some research I've found that the WD Blue also is 7200RPM. Some sites have even said the blue might even be better for gaming than the black.

Is there anything significantly different between the two, apart from the warranty? I've heard the black has technology to help it work better at different angles. My case does require mounting the hdd on its side.

You are correct in saying the blue is also 7200rpm but I am pretty sure the black is a faster drive.

Also the blue doesn't come in anything bigger than 1TB

Would not buy any seagate drives ever again based on the failure rates I've experienced.

We used to RMA seagates 20 drives at a time compared to one WD at a time..

Gotta be honest Seagates haven't caused me any trouble. My 5+ year old external Seagate is still going strong. Have Seagate become worse over time?

Seagate are pretty awful now and I would never get one.

If it were me the extra £18 is worth it for the Black considering you get an extra 3 years warranty.
