Hey guys,

I'm doing a 50 mile ride in a few weeks and am looking at putting some road tyres on my MTB. I've narrowed it down to some schwalbe marathons but not sure if I should be running 1.5" or 1.75". With 1.5" it looks like I'll also need new tubes since mine are 1.75-2.25.

Would there much much difference between the two sizes?

There's a MTB thread yknow ;).

Doesn't sound like much of a difference to me, but if it aint 700x23/25 I'm not sure...

Got any better suggestions? I'm happy to modify the route if someone with local knowledge can suggest anything.

Generally speaking I checked most roads on street view and avoided hideous looking ones where I could but by the end I kind of got route-planning fatigue and was less careful than I could be.

edit: We don't particularly *have* to get to Southampton so we could hit the coast(well, kind of coast) a bit further east if it's a less hideous ride.

Ideally if your aim is to hit the coast I'd want to go to New Forest, but this could be heaving with tourists dependent upon when you get there. Otherwise I'd come east a bit and head south east of Winchester.

Something like this https://goo.gl/maps/akHRx although this isn't a great route, but gets you to the coast along much quieter roads.

When you planning on doing it, would happily come and give you a tow for a bit providing I'll be awake :D

27th of June most likely (though semi depends on when the OcUK Manchester ride happens). Would love a tow by that point I imagine, though god knows what time we'd arrive, assuming we even arrived at all :p

May be able to assist, let me know nearer the time!

Get the narrower ones. Tubes cost nowt. You can't go wrong with Marathon Plus', absolutely bombproof they are. I ran them on my MTB commuter for years and then the 700c versions on my Cyclocross commuter when I switched bikes. They're definitely not light (but on an MTB who cares?) but they'll go forever over anything.

No rest days never did me any harm doing 150miles/week minimum.

Yeah but you eat snails so that's one carb I'll certainly not be getting! ;) :p

I wouldn't advocate no rest days. There is such a thing as over training and your body needs the rest periods to recover and get stronger.

I'm an advocate of this, I got into a 'rut' previously by commuting 4 days a week and could not progress, as soon as I mixed up the days commuting and swapped my rest day around I noticed differences in my energy levels/riding even with the insanely low volume. Until I did so I mentally 'felt' like my body wouldn't do long/leisure rides.

If your commute is only 4 miles each way (if my maths is right) then I wouldn't even worry about recovery tbh. You're getting enough.

The only way you're going to get less fatigued is to push harder to get your overall fitness up. Do longer rides to get more endurance and harder (faster/steeper) rides to get more strength. Worrying about anything else at this point is unnecessary.

<snip>

Anyway, long story short, don't worry about it. Just fuel up well and push hard. The rest will come. :)

You're right about the mileage, my commute is flat and boring so previously my 'stamina' was none existent with any kind of hill or longer ride. I was just 'racing' my commute previously and anything different really took it's toll. After I started turbo training and mixing up my riding a little more I noticed totally different gains in my riding endurance and style. I'm past that 'rut' now and all of the high-intensity riding/longer distance riding I'm doing I feel stronger every ride! :)

Great insight (thanks!) and I'm into the pushing part now - This counts right? ;)

Sorry for the delayed reply, I work nights so only just seen this!

If you could that would be great :)

Thanks.

I'll take them now as just about to head home :)

Ah them and us is it? ;)

No worries will try that thanks.

I think it's more along the lines of 'we don't really know unless one of us has done it... *waits for said person to arrive* ;)

The tow will only be supplied at SoliD speeds! ;)

Any recommendations for a mini D lock? The only one I can think of is the New York FahgettaboutLOLit - are there any that aren't super tonky like that one? Looking for something a bit smaller than the usual full-size D that can go in my bag occasionally for outside the pub etc, which is a bit more secure than a cable.

There's the kryptonite evolution mini, an orange one. That's alright, I have it and it's not massive but is pretty sturdy. Not a full size D lock and not as pricey as the fahgeddaboutit.

I use the kryptonite evolution mini too and it's a decent lock. After a year of all-weather riding abuse I did have to add pencil led shavings to get it to stop sticking but that's to be expected of most locks really.

My rear derailleur still isn't going all the way back by itself, heard a little bit of clicking/resistance when I pushed it up a little further, it's not far away from where it should be.

Any ideas?

You could try taking it off and giving it a good clean. There might be some gunk in that's stopping it moving all the way.
