I7 4790K hitting 100 C whilst gaming GTA V

Ok the title gives the issue. I have played a few different games and run graphics benchmarks with the current set up and never gone over 75 C, now I started playing GTA V and after playing for an hour or so looked at the temps and could not believe what I was seeing. I think I got some throttling but can't be sure until I have a play about later today.

I'm on a stock cooler and have had no reason to believe it is not seated correctly, never had any issues before.

It's not overclocked, just has the boost to 4.5GHz

Motherboard is on bios revision 5 (there are 3 newer version) but I don't want to flash the bios unless I really have too.

So why is GTA V stressing the CPU like this?

It's maxing out all the cores and I'm hitting 100 C, which can't be good.

I'm getting this information from Riva Tuner.

Is it accurate enough to use as a measure?

Will 100 C kill my CPU? Will it protect itself and I need not worry?

Should I try an after market heat sink and Fan? If so what do you recommend for a non overclocked 4790K for a man who wants to be able to run GTA V but not have my machine explode, and does not want to spend a fortune (£40ish).

Update the BIOS asap. Your probably using using an older BIOS, that incorrectly set the CPU voltage way too high, resulting in these high temperatures you're experiencing.

You could check the CPU voltage using CPUID or a similar program just to be sure.

Since the arrival of the UEFI BIOS, updating the BIOS got a lot more convenient to do, you'll be surprised :)

Also, be aware that if your CPU is running at 4.5Ghz, it is overclocked. The 4790k should run at 4.4Ghz maximum when only using a single CPU core, and 4.2Ghz when using all four cores. To achieve the 4.5Ghz overclock, your motherboard probably bumped the voltage up another notch even.

I've had experience with the stock hsf and the 4790k - in a well ventilated case I found it satisfactory for a non overclocked system. I had idle temperatures of 30-35 dc and load temperatures in games/encoding of 70-78. The only change I made for the hsf (I built this system for a friend) was to replace the standard gunk underneath the hsf for some mx2 thermal compound - this probably knocked off a couple of degrees.

Something is defo wrong, I run a 4790k but mines had a H105 and I never see the temps above 50.

As Dave said get the latest driver flashed and see what the read then.

Ok I've updated the bios, I've re-seated the heat sink and fan, ive adjusted the voltage down to 1.21 rather then 1.28.

I had not overclocked it and it was not overclocked other then the boost outlined in Dave's post above.

Still hitting 90 C with the side of the case off. No dust, gaming in TF2 get temps of 50C idle it's around low 30s

btw it's not riva tuner I got looking at the cpu temps it afterburner, could this be the issue?

What program will give me accurate temps on cores?

So what is going on?

I use HWmonitor, just leave it open in the background and then run a game for a while and check the maximum temps it hit after.

So just to confirm, it's reaching 90DC in GTA5, but 50DC in other games?

If you have any thermal paste lying around, I'd suggest removing the stock hsf, cleaning the base of the hsf and the CPU lid thoroughly, then applying some fresh thermal compound.

If you don't have any thermal compound, I'd recommend MX2(https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TH-004-AR

It's non conductive, easy to apply, and makes a big difference on the stock hsf in my experience.

If in the future you do decide to get a better hsf, then you'll need some good thermal paste anyway, so this wouldn't be a wasted purchase. It will also last for several applications, so maybe a few years if you don't upgrade often.

Forgot to ask - how is your case airflow? How many fans do you have as intakes and how many as outtakes?

Well update, for now I've turned off the auto boost stuff as after I had hardware monitor I saw all 4 cores running at 4.4GHz, which didn't seem right. I have set up the CPU to run at 4.00GHz on all cores for now lowered the voltage to 1.20V and run it again. I got 78 as my top temp 73 was lowest core reading, and it looks like the cores have less work on them?

Anyway I have some thermal paste I will clean off the stock HS and apply again, resit and see if that helps.

Case has 3 intake fans on the from 2 exhaust on the rear and a massive one on the top, air flow should be good.

78 seems far less scary than 100.

Just for comparison running folding at home and playing World of Tanks @4.5ghz at 1.2v-core and I'm mid to low 70's.
My old case has no active intake fans and 3 x 120mm via a rad and 2 x 40mm exhaust fans, CPU is under water.

Oh my lord , ditch the stock heatsink !

Seems like a plan, any recommendations, I don't want to go crazy on the spending, but want something what's a step up from the stock heat sink and fan.

Budget of around £40.

Edit by fiddling with some voltages and applying some new paste I'm now getting 80C tops after a couple of hours so its better but I feel the need for something more up to the task heat sink wise.

My brother is having a overheating problem with GTA with a FX8320 at stock, his cpu was hitting 80c in GTA but perfectly fine in every other game. I went around today and did a reseat with AS5, He just sent me a message saying it hit 71c and started to throttle.

He has a BeQuiet! Pure Rock Cpu Cooler and I set the fan to run at max speed.

Well I've adjusted voltages, turned off the auto boost stuff, re-seated and applied new paste and managed to set up a 4.2GHZ overclock on allcores (it was boosting to 4.4 on all cores which was not helping things) and now hit 80C and no higher, which will do for me now.

I can't be doing with taking out the motherboard to install a back plate for a monster heat sink just yet so I'll soldier on for now. May change my mind if we ever get a proper summer and the temps start to climb.

Please, update the cooler.

The stock cooler is shockingly bad and is known to reach a point where it needs to throttle.

This.

And it's utterly criminal to run a 4790K on the stock cooler!

Buy a Raijintek Triton and stare at astonishment in the improvement with your temps!
