Road Cycling

I'd prefer those 'rangies to block the road for the lorries ;) so they can't find the space for speed! :) it's a hard thing to solve..

something along the lines of allowing lorries/HGV's to drive through certain roads but BAN cyclists from them would possibly work? ;)

because narrow road + busy traffic + lots of cyclists = disaster and deaths.

Haha yeah, maybe some kinda segregated cycle lanes shared with public transport? ;)

It's almost impossible to solve, in my opinion it's more the attitude of drivers and cyclists along with educating them which needs action rather than any road/rule changes.

Also don't understand all the headlines about it, for the percentage of cyclists the number of deaths are actually quite low. None of the fairly brutal cyclist deaths here made the news!

I did, and it was glorious! Over 20 degrees and hardly any wind - arms are a bit pink now. 34 miles in 2hrs and seconds - Great pace for me considering that is my longest ride this year.

Legs are feeling it now though. 23mi on Tues, leg day yesterday and 34mi today, which would usually be my rest day. Swapped for Sunday seeing as the weather is forecast to be cack!

Good ride & well done, 2 hours is my usual 'average' for the shop social 30 mile rides I go on... Usual average speeds are 16/17mph!

the possible Manchester OcUK route a try on Saturday if I'm feeling brave.

Official OcUK route? :p ;)

Messed about with the new saddle at lunch time. Wow, difference was incredible. Average speed was much higher on the commute home. I did a quick 10 miler as well, and was pleased with the progress.

I'm still getting slight discomfort in my knee, so I'm going to attack the cleats tomorrow and see if that improves.

Defo cleats, every time! Glad you got the saddle sorted too, which one was it after?

I ordered a Fizik R5 to replace my TCR saddle which has creaked and groaned since new. A week in Mallorca with it was the last straw!

Sure it was the saddle and not your knees? ;)

I'll try a Fikik one day... My bottom has enough padding that I've had no real saddle problems...!

of course, you can't by default blame it on the driver but lets be honest, slow speeds + car is not = dead, while a lorry is just something else, because drivers simply do not see you.

Could not disagree more. If you decide of your own free will to take to the roads in a several ton metal box (be that car, truck, coach or whatever) then it's your responsibility to not injure more vulnerable road users. I know trucks have blind spots but that's not an excuse. If a driver isn't certain that they aren't going to mow down a cyclist then they should be moving off extremely slowly and assume that something *is* in their blind spot.

So after getting some form back this last few days been laid up in bed all day today with some form of virus, cramps from 9 last night and still going, altho slowly dying down. So annoyed as was looking forward to tting tonight and with the weather at the weekend due to not be great wanted to make the most of it. Hopefully be feeling better tomorrow.

Good easy way to do a core workout tho....

I went for the fizik one as the tcr saddle looks like a copy of it. It has similar dimensions/profile which is comfortable for me. But i can understand why it wouldn't work for many as its very narrow with little padding.

Quite gutted today when I woke up in pain, my shoulder has been giving me a bit of jip the last couple of days, hurt it at work three nights ago on a poor machine at work sparking an existing injury from my crash last year.

I spent nearly two months off it over Xmas (convienient timing) and I'm hoping to rest it until Tuesday evening before I commute to work again, I don't want to leave it any longer than that if I can help it but I don't want to be off the bike for months again.

The most frustrating thing is I'm setting myself targets, 500km mts, 6750m climbing, 750km specialised and 70 miles this week, ill be lucky to make most of them now.

So yeah. Pretty gutted. Just starting getting a decent level of fitness.

On the upside I'll be home in under 20 mins in the morning as I've driven in tonight haha. Beats the 50 mins I aim for most days!

What is your shoulder injury out of interest? Have you tried posting for rehabilitation advice in the mobility thread of the sports arena forum?

hence the inexperienced cyclist getting under the wheels, due to their own stupidity, narrow roads, dangerous HGV drivers etc..

There is responsibility both sides but with the lack of visibility in a lorry/large vehicle I think more awareness from cyclists of the dangers can only be a good thing.

Some of the stupid things I see cyclists doing almost daily, including undercutting/sitting on the inside of lorries/buses and EXPECTING to be seen. I can see how other road users are infuriated by some cyclists behaviour! I saw a woman last night undercut a queue of cars, then stop on the inside of a car signaling to turn left, traffic moves and she sets off slowly... Thankfully the car driver saw her and sat and waited for her to undercut to get out of the way.

Then again the majority of these cyclists are pavement hoppers and red light runners with the majority not wearing helmets. I hate to say it but for many of them their days are probably numbered.

That sounds rubbish! Hope you're feeling better soon mate, don't think there's much good riding weather this weekend so rest up ready for next week! :)

I agree with you :) every side needs to take the responsibility, hence me saying that the blame can't be defaulted to the driver! that would be plain stupid, cyclists with no lights, jumping reds on junctions etc are asking for trouble and if a driver hits one then hey ho.

truck drivers obviously take more responsibility as soon as they get behind the wheel of a massive 15tone machine BUT as a cyclist you need to make sure you understand how those machines work and where the blind spots are so you don't put yourself in danger!

Shots fired.

MEH, I couldn't care less if I tried! I have my reasons for not wearing a helmet and that's that...

this guy, in his article summarizes my feelings quite well -;

I see some scary cycling in London though.

I think there's two simple rules that if you don't break you are pretty safe.

Never overtake a lorry on the left hand side.
Never try and squeeze through a gap that is less that wide of you with your arms stretched out in both directions.

If you want to generalise its most the the fixies and vintage racers type in London I see doing this.
