Samsung SM951 M.2

Can you see any difference in actual use, or is it just benches?

Its a lot faster Dave i was quite shocked.

Gta load times. Dayz epoc etc are a lot better.

General windows about the same.

It gets really really warm 100 degrees and throttles with large file moves so im going to mod a heatsink and a small fan to stop this happening.

good to see the AHCI version are available in the uk now...i wonder what the youtube reviewer meant by "Samsung doesnt want you to buy these?" and when the NVMes might arrive.

They don't want the confusion of two AHCI and NVMe models in the market. I'm guessing the NVMe model is going to be released very soon, within a few weeks. Maybe that will have a retail name as well (something entirely different to SM951).

Results look good any ideas when these will be released

part number is MZVPV512HDGL..if you want to go looking...
its not available yet ..RRP looks like 512 euros...so looks like Samsung/retailers are going to milk the deepest pockets first...Maybe samsung will release properly with greater supply in retail channel for a more attractive price..wishful thinking.

that's because you have the inferior AHCI version.

no its because general windows queues are 1-4 max not 64 + which NVMe scales with and allows less cpu power required

I didn't think it was either, and I didn't think it made a great deal of difference anyway.

benchmarks for both are the same speeds

future ones tho will be faster with more lanes current tech isnt a bottle neck atm

The 512GB version of this is roughly the same price as the 400GB Intel 750. The 256GB is much cheaper. That's a though call.

I don't think its the NVMes that Samsung don't want you to buy but the SM9x1 range. Bear in mind that this is an OEM product and is not dealt with by the same sector of Samsung that deal with the consumer based SSDs. As such I believe that the warranty is dealt with by the vendor, the warranty is only 2 years rather than 5/10 of the EVO/Pro and as it is an OEM product you may only be entitled to a partial refund if the product goes faulty same as most OEM/Enterprise HDD.

Edit: Sorry I missed out the crucial part of my question XD It's the NVME that I don't quite understand

NVMe I believe is to do with the data transfer protocol i.e how the bus moves data around and over the interface. Basically AHCI was optimised for mechanical spinning drives, and NVMe is optimised for solid state.

As pointed out earlier. These are really aimed at OEM system builders and are NOT consumer products. So fingers crossed that who ever sells you one will honor the warranty, should you be unlucky enough to have any problems. ocUk have been very quiet on this issue and I have mentioned this twice before in one of their threads. Though no reason to believe that they would not help if things went FUBAR.

Also... nothing can read the SMART data off (someone said HD Sentinel works ... O'no it doesn't ... or Parted Magic etc. etc.), Secure Erase them and as far as I can see... no way to update the firmware on them either.

Can't say that stopped me buying one though. very happy with my purchase.

Though I suspect for the majority, better to wait for the retail / consumer based product.
