just how much grunt to game at 4k

4GB @ 4K is the equivalent to 1080p gaming on a 1GB card though is that really enough?

Mine with aa of or 2x on my 980 used to use around 3.5gb if u want aa on or higher u need 6 / 8gb.

Games like shadow of mordor and evolve used 4gb on meium settings with no aa

What do people here think the ideal amount of VRAM for 4K gaming is?

Personally I think that 2GB VRAM for 1080p is not enough now, 3GB is better and 4GB should be enough. Translated to 4K which is 1080p x 4, that means that 8GB is not enough, 12 is OK and 16GB VRAM would be ideal.

Depends on what card has what, 2gb is enough for 760/680 kind of performance. 8gb wont make a an ounce of difference on a 480 or something like that.

Setting arbitrary limits is pretty pointles.

Well to be fair they are running the games at 4k near max settings.

What is BS though is 52fps minimums on a single 980.

A66as i think ull be pleasently surprised just how well it plays in 4k on 1 980.
Most of my settings are maxed but on fxaa and average i get 52fps lowest ive actually ever seen fraps go down to is 38

52fps average, 38fps minimums.

The people in this thread arguing against 4K (UHD) frame rates prefer fluid gaming over visuals. Fair Enough.
The rest who have 4k (UHD) can accept 30-60fps as perfectly okay for gaming with brilliant IQ. Fair enough too.
Just get over it.

Even 38fps I find hard to believe.

There's nothing to get over it's just me and a few others clearly don't believe it.

Playability is a perception for each individual. Some say 20 FPS is perfectly fine :D

IIRC Edison found that when frames drop to below 27.6 FPS (it may have been 26.7 CBA to check) then the human brain can see the frames and notice the gaps, hence stutter.

So I always go 30 FPS minimum as playable. Anything less and yeah, you've got a bit of a mess on your hands.
