Afternoon off so went out for a ride up the Brickworks and back. Ended up getting a fair few PRs despite knackered legs and then got back to Ashley to meet a couple of others I was joining for a ride an hour early, oops :p Ended up getting caught in the rain and going home anyhow - though not before a bit of a sugar crash. Fun afternoon anyhow.

Yeah, made an effort for that one this time when I wouldn't normally bother. You have to cycle pretty far round here to find a hill, not like you Mancunian chaps.

Looks like ive left this bike buying lark a bit late.
Rose are out of Sram Red compact cranks in any size other than 170mm and canyon are pretty much out of XL size Ultimate ALs almost full stop.
Guess i'll either have to get the standard xeon rs 4400 or think about splashing out for the RS5000

Great ride this evening with [Damien]. Smashed out some PRs on the way out, got my second best time on a horrible cat 4, then pretty quick on the return leg as well. 15.9mph average, which I'll take considering there's a mile at 8mph in the middle of there.

My speed on the flat is improving, bit by bit. Gotta keep pushing.

Grudas would be proud *wipes tear from eye*.

Etixx talk was interesting. Main points were that they observed many athletes are short of magnesium and taking a supplement will really help cramping. Don't overdo it on the iron. Most of their products have caffeine in them. Quite a big emphasis on sorting your own diet out. Their gels etc tend to be non-standard flavours because they kept getting complaints about 'orange' flavour products. Bit of discussion about fat diets, not dismissed as pish but they observed that their athletes lost a lot of top end power that only carbohydrate could make. Probably more that I've forgotten :p

Goes with other mutterings I have heard over the recent few years about uptake of magnesium being a good thing. Bananas and spinach galore! :D

Iron is a tough one, when they say don't overdo it were they referring to supplements or naturally from diet? When I was at the height of my running and doing well, I had a 2 month spell of hell because even though I was really trying to get lots of iron from my diet, it still wasn't enough and I ended up deficient and sorted myself out with supplements. Direct on-set becoming iron deficient of course gets riskier the more and more you exercise, so 200+ miles a week, back to back on the bike is going to bring on this risk. So it would be good to hear a bit more on what they said about overdoing it on the iron, I am right now assuming they meant don't over supplement, but do remember to supplement accordingly if you are training a lot?

Focusing on this as I am just starting to supplement on liquid iron again because I don't think munching handfulls of spinach at every opportunity is cutting it with the training I am doing :p

Good work guys, looks like a great ride! Don't worry about your averages so much mate, you're not slow!

Good info and I bet it was really interesting to see how their thought process worked not to mention the 'real world' impacts a lot of these changes/diets/developments make!

I take magnesium and iron tablets. Been doing it for so long I'm not sure if they make a difference!

The modern diets we have any additional iron and magnesium would be good, I have a habit of eating spinach regularly for some good iron (& other minerals) intake but never really looked at anything specifically for magnesium. I take no supplements, just try to keep my diet as natural as possible (coming from a farm and having a vegetarian girlfriend certainly helps with this!). I don't take 'protein' shakes or anything like that and often wondered if I should to aid my recoveries... I guess the only 'supplements' I take are tabs in my drinks when weekend riding and a gel once in a blue moon!

Got fairly dropped on my commute this morning, gusty really cold winds (wind chill around 0-1 degrees?) this morning. Should've worn winter gloves as my long fingers just didn't cut it! Got passed/dropped this morning, not sure if the same guy I've seen other days as he was wearing full giant/shimano kit and riding a TCR (I think?). His pace was higher than the other guy too and I got a wave after shouting "morning!". Means I've been passed/dropped 3 times this week on my morning commutes. That's more than I'd see in a month over the winter! The summer riders are defo out...!
