Saw this woman who something along the lines of that she's been coming to the hospital I think or some important place everyday for the last 2 weeks......

Where the eff do people get this much free time?!?

As would your taxes fund a president or a dictator if any of them ran the UK.

I wonder if some people think a switch from a constitutional monarchy to a republic would be cheap or free.

It's not about money it's about democracy, we should elect our head of state. It's ridiculous that come Election Day the PM has to ask some old lady to form a government, we need to become a republic and have a codified constitution before the UK is a true democratic nation.

Charles memos when published will totally lay bare the extent of royal interference in democracy and hopefully the sheep will wake up

I just love how they ignore credible facts and call them spongers, the land they have is in fact inherited. Should we ban multi billionaires from handing down there wealth.
End of the day they bring in a lot of tourism and heighten Britain on the world stage, how many countries are now talking about Britain because of the birth? You can't turn down the fact that this publicity aides the British massively

inherited from whom? and how did he come to own it in the first place?

why are they of German descent ? didn't some documentary about 10 years agp track down the person who should actually be on the throne some british woman

give me a 1billion , a palace , a maintenance allowance and a few hundred years and I'll give you a prominent family that is generating revenue for the country too

I'll ensure they all work for a living and I'll add a clause that all children must attend regular free schools to keep in touch with the man in the street.

it'll be so much better than the bloated crappy royal family who wouldn't stop pee on you if you were on fire, y'all just rats to them

I'm not sure if you are implying that a Democratically chosen or indeed an Autocratic 'Head of State' is somehow worse than one automatically given it by Birthright. A President/Dictator or indeed any other Head of State also wouldn't have their entire Families on the Gravy train either...

Either way it will always cost the 'Average Joe'. The only issue I have with it is the Automatically by Birthright. We are no longer in Medieval or Feudal Times, if we were, what's to stop anyone claiming the Monarchy by killing the Reigning Monarch? That's how it works right?

If they want to play at Kings and Queens, Princes and Princesses then let them do it on their own money, it's not like they can't afford not to do it without State Support, their ancestors robbed and pillaged enough Land and wealth to keep them going for a few more decades at least.

Every single time anything whatsoever royal related comes up, the same bloody arguments recycle themselves.

I don't particularly care for this "event", but i think the royal class should go private, they still bring in money, but its time the political links (however pointless) should end as we desperately need to rethink politics in this nation if every election will end up in a stalemate.

Weirdly a thought i've had a fair few times. If I go and lop off the queens head, can I claim to be king now? Bet it wouldn't work like that...

from a financial pov it could be though it really depends how it is implimented

frankly I don't think it is a good idea as with the Royal Family we get a whole bunch of soft power and influence around the world... the Queen, her representatives and other Senior Royals can be used quite effectively for diplomacy, trade etc... I can't remember the documentary but during the Thatcher govt the UK upset a bunch of African countries due to it's ambivalence towards apartheid south africa. Some former senior diplomat or high commissioner was on the program basically saying that various African heads of state would only talk to him because he was a representative of the Queen, they hated the Thatcher govt's stance.

Having said that the (financial)cost arguments are usually nonsense - France has a thriving tourist industry bigger than ours - people still go visit their palaces despite being a republic. As for cost of a president - you could do that on a cheaper basis too, ceremonial duties no longer required so at least one guards battalion and half the household cav could go... don't need so many of the royal residences that are owned by the crown... security and travel could be the same or less as you'd have less people to protect... then again you'd have less people to actually attend different events - there are a bunch of working royals whereas a president can only be in one place at once.

but the tangible costs aside - the real value of having a royal family isn't easily measured but is worth a lot... that soft power and global influence shouldn't be underestimated... until the rest of the world comes up to the standard of western democracies we might still find that arab leaders etc.. quite like meeting prince charles etc.. and respect him a lot more than a normal diplomat

I would love to see us become a Republic and have the Royal family switched to symbolic status. It works for a lot of other countries.

They have enough money, they can look after themselves and hand it down appropriately. We shouldn't have to fund them.

I don't see how any one should have the right to wealth generated by the state by default. Why does everyone else live as "means tested" and not them?

In a round about way, they are the prime super Chav species.

I've got nothing against them as people, but I hate us being a Monarchy and trying to maintain a democracy of the traditional sense. Suppose it does make us very unique though.

The Royal Family costs taxpayers £40m per year to maintain.

Revenue from Royal Lands is £200m per year, which is surrendered to the UK. Not including tourism.

How do they sponge?

This is what I don't understand people are just Royal haters long live the queen etc :)
