$179m For that!!!!

Just credit checked him. He owns a timber mill or yard and is part of a property development company. Some things fishy.

well if someone clearly wants something from you and offers you a lot of money for it then it is almost always worth asking for more...

coming out in the press and stating that you're not going to sell out of principle etc..etc.. could help ensure the next offer is significantly higher - perhaps more so than just turning round and indicating that you would sell but for a bit more

though I don't think he's doing anything like that, I think he's genuine - his 'property development company' could be a fairly small business

that is just silly, there is a housing shortage in this country, he's not really helping anyone long term - it is just farm land not some areas of outstanding natural beauty

maybe he perceives himself to be some sort of local hero for not selling up and believes he's standing up for some sound principle or other, perhaps some people in the local community/pub don't like outsiders or don't want more housing - NIMBYs etc...

while I'm sure he's quite well off regardless some of his relatives further down the line might well wish he'd made a different decision if that farm starts to struggle in future

Good for him I say.

You'd easily get finance. 1000's of homes on prime south east land with planning. No brainer.

I'm sure a big developer could, or some investor with a track record working with a big developer

I'm not sure farmer Giles with his (previously worth 2.5 million) farm and a stake in a small property development company' could, at least not on his own.

Some art is a good investment, a rar Picasso is certainly a good investment.

Also people have differing tastes, if you have unlimited money then what does it matter how you spend the money?

Got to say i would sell up in a heart beat. Can plow 100m into various other nature projects

well yeah, a few million could easily buy up a whole bunch more countryside many times the size of that farm, perhaps something a bit more significant than farmland too, wrap it up in a trust to be preserved in perpetuity

and he'd have 270 million to leave to the grandchildren or give to charity projects etc..
