Yeah, that's because that's used to convey how the word is spelt. I'm talking about a word being spelt how it's said to aid in pronunciation, rather than spelling.

They're similar, but not the same. Though I can see how you'd get the two mixed up. One is spelling phonetically, and one is phonetically spelling.

I remember when I was a kid my cousin thought Grand Prix was pronounced Grand *****s. I was about 8 or 9 and had to explain it was French.
