Hey all,

over the last 3 weeks my computers been grinding to a halt.
It started just being a bit sluggish after it had been in sleep mode (like me :p) which was fixed with a reboot.
Now its got even slower and is painful to move about, open folders and locks up for 30 seconds when using various programs.

I've run malware / antivirus / clean up tools with no improvement.

I downloaded HD Tune to benchmark the HDDs and it looks like that is the issue.

D: - 2 x Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB, In RAID 1, for storage.
Benchmark fine at 135mb/s

C: - WD 500GB Caviar (windows and progams)
1st Benchmark 5mb/s - did reboot and ran "disk error checking"
2nd Benchmark 25mb/s
3rd Benchmark 47mb/s

my system is;
Intel i7 950
Gigabyte x58a-ud3a
6GB Mishkin Blackline RAM
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 SUPER OC 1024MB
Corsair HX Series 650W Modular
Windows 7

Ive not used HD Tune before so could be doing something else wrong.
Is my HDD about to die or can it be fixed with firmware / bios / clean install.

cheers,

How old is the drive, how long is the machine left on and used a day?

Have you considered an SSD, it can remove all you woes and give a huge speed boost.

Also the temp is quite high, mine run at 30-35C

The drive is 8 years old but I dont use the machine that much and dont leave it on when not using.
Yea a SSD will be the next thing I upgrade and I always hear how much of a boost it give.

How do I know if that definitely is the problem or if its something else or even software?

Whats the best way to check temps and fan speeds?

try to find cause of slowness is best way.

Free Mem
%Idle on each cpu
Disk Queue length is good place to start in perfmon for storage subsystem performance.
small timeperiods so as to not obsuce peaks in averages...

if the disk is going much slower than expected, i would back it up now regardless of smart errors..if not already done so..

Incase it was temp related Ive given the fans and heat sink a clean to get rid of dust.
CPU and GPU temps are normal.

Ive ran another HD tune benchmark and its still the same.
I'm now running the full error scan to see if that throws up any damaged areas but will take a few hours.

Do those results posted look like a faulty HDD?
what else can I do to fault find?

thanks,

That temperature is quite high, I wouldn't say it's doing the drive any good. Best to get things that you need migrated before this drive fails!

So I ran HD tune in safe mode to rule out software and got similar results.

Could it be firmware / bios / jumpers?

Look in event viewer

Check for disk errors.

Once they start to go, you can't do anything to fix them.

If you've identified the bad drive, remove and replace it.

Sometimes a chkdsk f or r can resolve small issues.

Download SeaTools for windows and run a long test.
Get CrystalDiskInfo and show us the screenshot of the drive

A 50'c HDD makes me worry about the rest of your temps :D

The fact it's being slow at very similar points during the benchmark suggest the drive is on it's way out. Backup/replace.

Use as storage(that's been backed) or unimportant data till it dies.
Reformatting may help it a bit. :P

I downloaded and ran the long test on SeaTools. first time it failed at 3%. second time it made it all the way through.
It also made it all the way through the error scan on HD tune with no damaged sectors.

Here are the temps for the rest of the machine off SpeedFan

Thinking about it I reckon this drives been running a bit iffy for a couple of years now.
But Ive been using the machine mainly for media until recently when its become my work machine again.
