Hey all,

Any advice welcome here. I was with BT infinity for a while and their service was spot on. However due to wanting a static i.p and also the cashback on offer i chose Plusnet over Zen for my next isp. However is started going down hill. Here are the "average" connection details over the last year or so.

This was when the connection was installed or fairly close to it

it then settled to this and stayed at this speed for a long time.

However in the last 3 months this is the best i can get out of my connection now. (on average 61-63)

Weirdly the upload has gone upslightly but on average i have 62-63 mbps that a 10 mbps drop !! and my ping averaged 25 but i can get 20 at times.

Nothing has changed on the hardware front and my entire house is Cat5e with everything being Gig connection. I have an Asus AC68U router with the white openreach modem. I get the same result connected directly to the open reach modem so its not my network slowing things down i dont think.

I would expect as more people take up fibre for it to slow at peak times but this is 24/7. I asked plusnet but they did not even want to help saying my connection works.

Im seriously tempted to give Zen a go now and see if that improves things. a 10mbps drop in my eyes is a huge drop 15% of my connection speed has just walked away and also over doubled my ping. Has any one else had this ?

You need to find out if your sync rate has also dropped. If you're being affected by crosstalk then there is nothing you can do to fix it.

just spoke to plusnet on their " help chat" and they said 70.4Mb/s is my sync speed.

the exact reply was
I've taken a look through your account, and the average speed you should be getting on your line (and the estimate on sign up) is 52Mb/s, so the 65Mb/s that you are currently getting is actually quite a bit higher than it should be. I've also tested the connection and you're syncing at 70.4Mb/s, so unfortunately there's not going to be a great deal that we can do to improve the speed any further. Sorry about that

but when i signed up my estimated speed was 70mbps this was then dropped to 50mbps in december WTF ! what has happened that they have even dropped the estimate that much

White ECI modem or huawei hg612?

The ECI modems don't play nice with huawei cabs with g.inp on. That was switched on while back, could be that, if not crosstalk.

I also suggest that if you have an ECI modem and the cabinet has huawei hardware, then I suggest that you get your hands on the hg612 OR modem since PN isn't going to do diddly squat until your download speed drops below 45 or there about.

Another thing you can do is get and ADSL/VDSL router that supports g.inp to get around the issue, but that'll cost a bit since I think the cheapest over on the main site is £150 (there is nothing in the specification (and this is from the TP-link website) of the TD-W9980 that states that it supports g.inp, so it might be best to avoid that one unless someone else can confirm otherwise).

If you're synced at 70Mbps but the ISP is congested to the point where you can't get more than 60-something then a new modem is unlikely to solve that.

Your speed tests are from different servers. Your first is to Nottingham and last 2 to London. Try testing consistently and your results will be more accurate

You should see if g.inp has been enabled on your cabinet. if you have a cabinet or router that doesn't properly support it you can end up having a higher ping and lower download like that.

Switching ISP's really won't make much difference. I rate plusnet pretty highly out of all ISP's to be honest anyway.

If it is g.nip and you are looking for a single solution router modem that supports it you really can't get better then the Billion BiPAC 8800NL.

I dont really want to change my router, its an asus ac68u and cost me over £100, the range is amazing and the features suits me so well.

Its more the ping thats bugging me than the dl speed. However i still want my missing 10 meg back lol.

Ihave tested of a number of servers and just posted best results. If i go back to notingham now its even worse

I just ordered the Huawei HG612, it was only £20 for a pre hacked one (the one i linked) got to be worth a stab in the dark to see if it makes a difference. I will report back with the findings when it arrives.
