I thought the frenetic nature of the fighting was excellent, however major annoyance with the 'CONVENIENTLY PLACED BOAT' that all the fleeing people ignored.
they didn't... the boat came back for them, Jon told them to come back for him

My guess, possible spoiler
it is likely he has been bitten, so the change will be slow, especially for someone his size, and he will be the other side of the wall when he change to a zombie, which will be impossible to stop and he will open the gate from the inside.
Let's face it, it would be a bit boring if they all can sit on top of the wall and fight them off this not in any real danger of losing.
^^ Yeah their bite doesn't turn anyone that I recall - there is that whole thing with burning the bodies in a past season that explains how it works IIRC but I don't remember exactly.
Valyrian steel was manufactured with dragonfire.
When reading the night's watch's library/documents, Sam learns about dragonsteel, which they think might have been Valyrian steel. It could be the same thing, it could just be the dragon link.
I love the fact that dragons are clearly the link to defeating winter lot. Both dragon glass and steel for the walkers and also fire to burn wights... Daenerys holds the key.
Aye either Dany of he who controls the Dragons. Thus far that isn't Dany,
I do hope Bran will warg one! Dany ride one, and someone do something cool with the third one!
They are setting up Jon and Danny as the main winter fighters (IMO) maybe they will get it on and he'll become king with her and they will dragon tag team the White walking fools!!
There may be a family tie between Jon and Danny, if some of the hints in the books and TV show are to be believed. There is a storyline the TV show hasn't followed yet, The Three-Headed Dragon.
book spoiler question in response to his book spoiler answer
I recall the legend the prince that was promised and all the rest, but who is meant to be this third head, If Jon and Dany are two of them? Bran isn't a Targarean, but he is certainly being portrayed as a person of importance come the ending?
Tonight, Sky One.
