Hello all,

Would you guys recommend a 512GB or a 1TB SSD for OS/Apps and Games?

The reason I can't decide is because I know games these days are taking up a lot of space and I don't want to run out in the future. I like to have quite a lot of games installed at once. Currently I've got about 15 games on a 150GB partition which is now full but quite a few are small indie games.

Will I find myself needing more space before the SSD needs to be replaced? 1TB seems like overkill and I could without spending the extra money but if it was really needed I would do.

Also, if I had to do a firmware update on say a Samsung SSD. Does it need to be done on another PC like a few years back or can it be done while the OS is in use?

Thank you very much

Firmware upgrades can usually be done via your OS.

It's hard to guess how much space you'll need. I'd probably go 512GB because the days of standard SSDs are limited now PCI-E drives are coming in. By the time you fill 512GB there'll be more interesting tech around.

You already have the os on an ssd? Just put in a large 3 or 4tb HDD and stick your games on that, put a few most played games on the ssd

250GB OS SSD and 512GB apps/games SSD another option.

I find it handy to have a spare 1TB HDD though for chucking stuff on, etc.

it depends on what games you play and how often you buy games.

I know far cry 4 takes up 33GB and GTA 5 needs 55GB. do you have a budget at all?

if you have the money then get a 1TB drive as you should be fine for games for a long time

I have a 250GB for a OS Drive and 250GB for games

I'm going with the 1TB to give me plenty of space to play with. Is there any reason to go for the Samsung Pro over the Evo? I read the Pro would last longer and has a 10 year warranty but would I really want to keep the drive for 10 years, I imagine a lot will change in that time regards tech.

Im cnsidering the same thing atm. Currently i have approx 250gb of games installed. So i think 500gb should do. Uninstall them when i stop playing them tbh. 150mb net means it only takes an hour max to download anything anyway

512GB very workable, 1TB luxury..An MS OS 7+ after a while will use 80GB..
Id say that difference in speed is minimal for a given class, so 1TB cheap and cheerful is better value than 512 'premium'.

Crucial BX is the one id go for currently.

i would go for 1x1tb

advantages of 1x1tb
higher performance-larger device tends to have best performance (1x1tb vs 1x500gb).
less sata sockets/case space used..more options later down road
cheaper - £/gb tends to go down as size goes up

advantages of 2x500gb
Backup of OS drive as drive rather than partition - dedicating an entire disk (rather than partition) to the os, makes OS backup/restore a little bit more fool proof for piece of mind..
Performance - in theory 2 drives utilised fully at same time faster than 1...but highly unlikely both drives would be fully utilised at same time...esp if 1 is os and 1 in games.

I've decided not to get an SSD for my games. I have an SSD for the OS and have about 27gb free on it which is fine for now. However, I discovered that it isn't running at its full read/write speed so I feel buying a new SSD that won't perform to its full potential is a bit of a waste of money.

Instead I'm going to get a large HDD for games and music.

Quick question, my system is about 5 years old now, will it recognize a 4TB HDD or do I stick with 3TB which I know will be recognized as I already have one as a back up drive.

Thanks.

I'm on a 512GB. If I were buying now, I'd probably go for a 1TB just because I think games in the next year or 2 will readily devour the disk space. I've already filled up most of my SSD with games and I don't really want to have to uninstall any of them.

Lol It's probably not running at advertised read/write down to either the sata controller on your motherboard or because in practical real world tests a sata ssd rarely reaches its advertised speed.

Im also quite sure that's running a Marvel controller so is most likely the cause and a new ssd wouldn't solve that. may see more benefit from a cheap raid controller.

This is what I'm doing now but I've read older systems sometimes don't recognize 4 and 5 TB drives. Should I stick with a 3TB? I've got a 1TB currently for music and games that is now full. 3TB will be enough won't it?
