I recently moved house and bought some cheap table (previous one was a decent £200 corner desk from Argos that lasted about 6 years but decided not to bring it with me).

The current table was purely a temporary table until I settled down to get a decent one, so that time has some.

I've been looking in the desk and room gallery and found a few that look great

As such, I've found the alex range on ikea (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10192824/) unfortunately I can't find the one that comes with the filing cabinet but I can live without that..

So the following is my current cart, can anyone recommend anything I'm missing and a table top that'll fit that (fyi everything else in the living room is wooden laminate flooring, white walls, and oak effect tables/tv unit/etc.)

2x ALEX Drawer Unit (White)
1x SIGNUM Cable trunking horizontal, silver
1x FIXA 114-piece cable management set

Have never bought table like this (typically buy a full thing, rather than bits), so will I need to screw the top into the drawers or get other legs for it or something? don't really think it'll just 'sit on the top' fine.

Suggestions? :P

You won't need extra legs for it. I would consider screwing it down though, either that or just sandwich some anti-slip matting between the desk surface and the drawer unit tops.

How much of a handy man are you/have access to decent tools? If you got a decent saw for a straight cut I'd just grab some planks 300mm wide of oak and biscuit 2 or 3 together. You can have them as long as you need then.

^ I bought myself some kitchen side and cut it to size, held up with a few brackets along the wall and then one leg on the corner that's open. Well that's how it's going to fit when I get some time to actually screw it up!

Handy men ftw! Love a bit of woodwork. I also love those drawer units and would have made my own desk with them a long time ago if I had the space for them in my room/didn't spend nine months a year not here.

You quoted a pic of my desk, I have not screwed it down its fine just plonking it on the two draws as long as its solid oak. you will find the cupboard verison when you go to ikea, the website does not show all of the models it comes in. I got the top off ebay here pick the size you want and think of what depth you want, 620mm I think is too short and most flatpack desks come between 720mm and 800mm, I went for the 960mm and planned to cut some off but it works great.

Its a great desk combo and I am very thankful to the people who did it before me to see how good it looks :p

Thanks, will go to Ikea on Monday and see if they have the filing cabinet version as I'd much rather one of each.

Which legs do you have at the back? just the standard ones I linked above?

they are ADILS range in IKEA about 2.50 each, however they are not really necessary and don't do much. I just got them as I got the 960mm top the lip is a lot but not so much to flip the whole thing over, however I still used them as I had them lying around.

Are you going to IKEA for the ALEX filing cabinet one I have? becasue the plastic filing system does not come with it, keep an eye out in the desk area and you can pick it up for 6 quid just incase you did not know :).

Yeah will try to nip in on Monday to have a look at the ALEX range.

I want it in a similar style as you have (1 of the ones I linked in OP, and one with less drawers + a filing cabinet). Yeah I seen the filing cabinet 'set' on ikea about £6 so will pick that up as well as the signum cable tray thing.

Will see what table tops they do might just get one off them for simplicity.

because if you add two cabinets under the galant I don't imagine there will be much space, as the 4 legs at the sides are going to push the units in quite far.

It's 160cm long... unless your cabinets are really wide, there's plenty of space, and the legs can be made higher (60-90cm) so the cabinets can sit underneath (just enough not to block the drawers obv) them rather than being hemmed in by them.

Just seems like a lot of faff to do otherwise.

Doesn't seem as there's much work just getting 2 drawers and dumping a tabletop on the top of them.

Maybe screw it in or maybe some form of adhesive anti slip

Will see what my options are when I go to ikea.

I got the filing system... its way too big for the drawer?

The drawer is only something like 36x70 (so 36 wide) the filing seems about 50.

the filing i got is about 40 deep

their is two types.

Ah you're doing it that way instead of from side to side :p

Will try that tomorrow, the bar seems a lot of effort to push through as it doesn't like to go through properly.

Scotteh, any chance of posting some pics of your desk? Looking for a new desk setup for myself and like squarepusher's as well. Not into DIY so I like the idea of plonking a top onto the cabinets. Only got a small room as well so nothing too big.
