Insurance or not this isn't your regular Fiesta that can be repaired/replaced easily which makes this worse.

I can't really see that claiming on the insurance is going to be worthwhile, especially if he wants to keep the car. I'm pretty sure that would be a write-off in the eyes of the insurers

Yes - looks like that. In an odd way it's fortunate you had the battery out of the car. Better to have this of it than no car at all.
