Burnsy / police question (air rifles)

His thread is aimed at a member who is a policeman, it's not like he's asking a pastry chef.

Yes, it is and how would that stand him legally as he has no proof said person is advising him in a professional capacity. This is exactly the same as a medical thread in principle - advise for something that should be gained in person - with proof etc because the consequences can be severe.

I wouldn't be impressed if I saw a neighbour with one of these, too many people shoot at cats for giggles.
Swap 'cat' for 'child' and you can see the potential for innocently hacking someone to death (for giggles, natch)

Depends where you live, country folk I would say acceptable

Terraced housing maybe not

Semi detached with neighbours either side and some at rear, again not

s21A Firearms Act
(1)A person commits an offence if—

(a)he has with him an air weapon on any premises; and

(b)he uses it for firing a missile beyond those premises.

(2)In proceedings against a person for an offence under this section it shall be a defence for him to show that the only premises into or across which the missile was fired were premises the occupier of which had consented to the firing of the missile (whether specifically or by way of a general consent)

Also relevant, s161 Highways Act 1980

(2)If a person without lawful authority or excuse—

(a)lights any fire on or over a highway which consists of or comprises a carriageway; or

(b)discharges any firearm or firework within 50 feet of the centre of such a highway,

and in consequence a user of the highway is injured, interrupted or endangered, that person is guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.”.

You also can't discharge an air weapon within X distance of a public path or road. Something like 15m iirc. OP needs to swot up before armed response get all Mark Duggan up in there.

another reason to ask this on a dedicated shooting forum, this is incorrect advice.

These are two relevant pieces of legislation. Like has been said it needs to be below 12lbft otherwise it requires a firearms licence but you'll never know unless it's tested.

There could be other offences depending on how/where it's used but that's all very situation dependant.

What is the back story?

He isn't a policeman though.

So that's not a warrant card in my pocket then? Who knew?

I know a guy that just joined the police force. Is rather chuffed that he will get a nice pension and retire early. I'll ask if he knows and report back.

There's plenty of officers on the forum - even in the mod team.

Also, if he just joined then I'm laughing at the early retirement and pension...

It might need to be below 12ft lb
but like somebody else said, what about the size of the garden?

In relation to size of garden.

If there is any risk of a pellet leaving your property. its too small and will also land you in deep do do.

Join up with airgunforum or the verminhunters fb page. Great bunch of guys who you will learn a lot from

36 ft isn't very long tbh. For example I zero at 35 yards.

I'd recommend searching for a reputable club and learn some basic gun handling before you go shooting a potentially deadly weapon in a confined space.

Air rifle controls are already under scrutiny. Don't be that person who ruins it for all the responsible air rifle shooters out there

Well iirc if its causing you alarm. They might be commiting and offence.

Sounds pretty irresponsible either way if you got kiddies running around next door.

Have you tried talking to them? Might pay to point them in the direction of the links provided
