BMW M5 F10 ownership cost?

...and an RS6 will probably cost more. I have had a few people tell me the RS6 was the most expensive car they ever ran and that's from people who run supercars.

Hmm some fair points.

6k miles per year.don't care about fuel costs or ved.

What I'm looking for:
Large - I have a family of 4 and a dog.
Fast - If my mondeo does 0 to 60 in just over 6 seconds, I'd want something a fair bit quicker. So say under 5 seconds.
Automatic - Always had Manual, fancy something lazier.

Please don't send too much time considering, it's probably just a moment of madness.

You sound like you have no idea what an M5 does, have you driven one yet? It will be so much quicker than the Mondeo, not different league, different world and frankly if you haven't you need to drive one. If 0-60 is important the M5 is not really the car as it's not getting into its stride until 100mph and from there, not much this side of a hyper car or the quickest supercar will hold it. This is a real 210mph saloon car and all of them seem to read well over 600bhp on rollers. I saw 685bhp from one a few weeks back and that was a standard car.

I Can't help thinking a 550i would feel like an M5 compared to any Mondeo, and be a lot cheaper to buy and run.....

The OP says it himself, probably a moment of madness, as already asked, has he tried an M5? Any of them?

I looked over a new Mondeo at the weekend, just because I happened to be at a pub across the road from a Ford dealer , it was nice, sure, but my 15year old e39 felt sooooo much better when I got back into it and to be fair to him, even the salesman said he thought it would, it's a world away from a rep mobile Ford ,as it should be, despite its years, I wonder why the op is thinking of such a huge jump?

If the OP has a thing for speed but wants a drug crazed Wolf in Angry dog clothing then an M5 perhaps is an option but I can't help thinking he's after the wrong car.

An M5 is something I'd expect a 911 owner who's gained a family to opt for not a Fast Mondeo driver to think is his next logical step tbh....

you could consider an ISF?

£18-20k then stick a warranty on it for 2 years at £800.

Fixed cost ownership proposition, seem to have stopped depreciating heavily too.

I haven't driven an m5, it's all just a mad moment. But I thought hey I can afford one, but was concerned the cost of ownership would be too high for what I'd get from it.

I did though want something a fair bit faster than my chipped modeo. A little faster would not be worth changing.

But then the kids and dog would probably wreck it.

The ISF doesn't look like a bad shout for something more reasonable.

I think going into something like this simply because you can is going to be fraught with fail and disappointment. Having run big powerful cars for a few years I can confirm they can come with big expensive bills and big expensive depreciation and an M5 is world class at both, especially the latter.

I'd love an M5 (never realistically attain one tbh!) driven all as they should be - e28 included - with the exception of the f10 which was a mere quick blast and I'd give my right arm for one.
Unless you feel the same then the 550i - which I've driven both e60 and f10 variants - is all you'd ever really need and then some!

Plenty that's a fair bit faster than a 260bhp Mondeo out there, the M5 is for the mad loons who are swayed by its stupidity!

I think it's safe to say OP, that ain't you!

As others have said, it doesn't sound like the M5 is the right choice for you. Have you considered just getting a 2nd car to have a fun in but stick to something more ordinary for carting your family around in?

Exactly - £50k = Mondeo Estate + Caterham 7

A car you don't have to worry about where you park it and a roller skate with more fun per KG than just about anything else.

I made a huge mistake when I sold my 2nd Caterham. I thought that I could combine sensible and fun in the same thing. I bought a Subaru Imprezza Turbo back in 93.

I should have kept the 7 and bought a focus or something and not tried to combine the two.

Why don't you lease one for two years to scratch the itch and then get something sensible afterwards? That'll probably cost you 18-20k which for the most part you'd have lost in depreciation and warranty on a second hand one

2nd car option is something I'd be more likely to consider when the wife can drive. Although a Caterham sounds like a mad fun idea!

The 550i looks really good. But hell they are rare for a recent one!

I've got an F10 M5 and the running costs are what you want them to be (to a point). It's not rocket science putting brake pads or discs on and I do my homework when dealing with tyres. My M5 is five years old and I use a trusted and respected BMW independent garage which reduces labour costs by £100+ per hour. I don't use main dealers on principle having seen some genuine fraud committed.
The car is undeniably fast, it makes my previous cars (BMW 335D remapped) and B6 S4 seem extremely tame. It's so well specced and finished and the gearbox is unbelievably good. You get a lot of car for your money. Sure, you could drive into quickfit and replace brake pads/discs and tires and light up £3k...or....source the tires on line for £600 all round and fit the brake pads and discs yourself for cost (£1000). It's just about managing it. I don't deny that if my turbos went bang it'd hurt but I ran a twin turbo for 140k miles and with oil changes every 10k it never missed a beat. I don't see value in being afraid to run a car. If you do buy one, you won't want to get out of it.

I know this is old and probably not that relevant but I've been thinking the same.

I have a B7 diesel estate for long journeys, a Mini that I seem to be using for work commute and nothing for fun (although the Mini is amusing albeit too slow) I've considered getting a B7 RS4 and ditching the diesel but then I could save myself £10K, keep the diesel and buy something interesting for £10K. I've got the space.

Running costs of an F10 M5 under warranty won't be that high. The servicing is pretty cheap (and get one under 5 years/50k miles old and you may get some free) and even BMW won't charge you much for discs and pads.
