I don't normally watch TV but at the in laws today and in the space of about an hour have seen 5 Facebook ads on TV. The adverts are rubbish, all happy chappy airy fairy nonsense. Why are they doing this 10 years on? Ridiculous rubbish really. I don't have anything against Facebook or its users, just don't see why a social media would need to advertise on TV. Especially one as big as Facebook.

Funny you should say that, I saw one the other day and found it odd. I've never seen one before and like you said, why do they need to advertise their site.

Likely because the only people who don't use it are people who don't use the internet full stop :p They are probably appealing to that small minority in the hope they join. I doubt the gains they'll get from increased user base will be worth the expense though!

Facebook has become the thing everyone needs to have and nobody actually wants. Its actually a bit of a chore being on there now.

I saw an advert for loans earlier today and it said "APR %1200+" or something. I thought the government was to (or had) cracked down on those loan companies?

The same reason Coke advertise relentlessly; to stop the brand feeling stale or generic I imagine.

What a great quote.

It's so true though. I'm glad I deactivated it when I did. Although the time I wasted on there has now translated across to time wasted on here.... Lol

Agreed, these barclays digital Eagle ads are almost as annoying. Why don't they stick to lending people money?

I found the adds odd as pretty much anyone who wants facebook has it and people like me who never joined i would think are not tempted by the adds to join

Never seen an ad for Facebook on tv, but I would have been puzzled had I seen it though.

I did see an advert on tv for scientology today though... that was weird.

I don't use Facebook anymore and haven't for months, deactivated it because it's utter tripe.

Definitely do not need it at all!

I thought everybody knew Facebook is run by the CIA.

So that's the reason why you're seeing ads for facebook on TV.

It's basically to increase the scope of data required for the Minerva Initiative. It's an initiative that collects unprecedented amounts of data on human behaviour.

For example it collects things like where you pause a YouTube video and for how long.

Another example is how long you look at planted images on Facebook and which images cause people to stop scrolling down, even the precise location of your mouse pointer is logged while you're browsing Facebook.

If you have doubts about what I'm saying you need to ask yourself, does Mark Zuckerberg actually need more money from these people who will sign up to FB through his new advertisement?

The answer is absolutely not.
