Major fire in Canterbury!

Someone over the back of me had a house fire. Pretty bad one, they was inconsolable as their cat had died in the fire. Or so they thought. Said cat had legged it sharpish out of an open window when the fire broke out. Came strolling home 2 days later.

Thank god for the odd shaped rooms or else I'd have bought one of those flats.

It started around 2pm? It must have been a slow build up then because I was around there at 3pm and didn't notice anything.

I think we left about 5.10pm, so it was still going up until 5pm. I counted 3 fire engines trying to keep the blaze down at the time. It was the flats from the roundabout towards castle street car park

The fire started at 2.28pm on Saturday in the utility room of a top floor flate in Creine Mill Lane.

Stunned onlookers watched on as crews tackled the flames as they licked through the building, destroying roofs and leaving plumes of smoke rising above the cathedral city.

Fire crews used breathing apparatus and a 135 ladder to tackle the blaze.

“Ten engines are currently at the incident. All residents are accounted for. The area is being evacuated.”

“It was very dramatic - I’ve never seen anything like it in Canterbury.”

Whilst I too don't think it's particularly newsworthy to us in general. I think one thing should be taken away from it.

Those flats sucked! Build firewalls you dummies.

This!

Cheap build homes slammed together, one person's mistake and they all go up!

Check this out

A total of 30 homes have been affected, and some destroyed, as flames ripped through the block of flats but all residents have been accounted for and no one is thought to be trapped in the building.

I mean seriously, one big fire and everything goes

If those are the new houses that were built by Bellways - there's your answer right there. Atrocious Cowboys with a brand name. The upper floors of most modern buildings are just timber frames with a substantial outer cladding. They ARE fire rated to a degree, but once a proper fire takes hole, it's only so much firewood. Glad no-one was injured, but it must be totally devastating for the people who have lost their homes. My heart goes out to them

The building opposite me is completly wooden cladding less than 20 foot from my sons bedroom window doesnt bare thinking about ..was another fire a few months ago in a flat where the electric box in the storage cupboard caught fire !!! All at the tannery .

I witnessed the fire and saw how adjoining roofs started to pour smoke from the tiles very quickly. In a short time that adjoining roof was burning and then collapsing. This was quickly followed be the same thing happening again on yet another adjoining roof.

I could see dividing walls up to the roof ridge but the design didn't appear to be fireproof and just let the flames through.

Why is it on OcUK you always get people hurling abuse at others all the time!!

Ironic considering you were the one hurling abuse at homosexuals? hypocrite much?

Back on topic, poor families :( so sad to see losing all their possessions, does go to show as well how quickly and cheaply these new builds are knocked up considering how quickly it's spread and destroyed it.

Sitting on the fence here. Yeah, it can be a life changing experience but, at the same time, it's usually just personal items that can be recovered by insurance.

As I had my entire flat burn down in 1993, it is kind of startling at first but you get over it quite quickly.

I rescued my moggy, who decided to run in through the flames to get to the food bowl. Being flats, however, there shouldn't be too many animals there anyhow. Mine mainly lived on the roof. He was weird.

I used to live near there when I went to uni. There's some lovely buildings in Canterbury and the affected properties always stood out to me as typical, naff new builds.

Correct, completely out of character with the rest of Canterbury!

What's even more shocking, is the ones further down are built on areas that used to take flood water.... Then wonder why parts of Canterbury flooded few years back.

:o
