Sunday Trading

Of course, but I would see it bringing a different attitude to Sundays. I'm talking about commercial chains rather than smaller ones though.

I don't think it'll make any difference to be honest.
The only ones I've come across with short Sunday hours are the spit and sawdust one man band type places which won't change as they close so they're not living there 7 days a week, there's plenty of 24 hour gym and the big commercial ones are still usually open till late evening.

try anytime fitness, they're open 24 hours... you have a keyfob for when they're not staffed - they have an entry system, cameras and buttons to talk to remote staff etc.. for those time periods...

There are some Gyms around that are already open 24/7 so you can go for a 4am drunken weight session and get massive in the night

The 24 hour ones locally are pretty crappy for me unfortunately. I'm just secretly hoping my favourite gym decides to open later. :p

Doesn't change the way you and your family have to spend the Sunday :) this at least gives people the option.

It changes how some families (and individuals) have to spend Sundays - someone has to staff those supermarkets and DIY places during the extended hours. And those people are poor and unskilled, so have little power to do much about it. Having to work when most aren't cuts you off from many social activities.

Not that I think we shouldn't change to standard opening on a Sunday (it's great for me, and seems sensible generally), just that there is a downside for some people.

have you suggested it to them? maybe have a word with the manager and other gym users - if there is enough demand from members perhaps they'll consider it

yes but you'll tend to have a shift arrangement so you don't work every Sunday

sometimes people have to work Christmas or New Years Day too - I had to a couple of times earlier in my career

I expect once Sunday becomes another working day then they'll stop the enhancement some people get for working them. Just another way to pay the less well off less.

probably, but if it does just become another working day and we worry less about having set days off/introduce more flexibility to time off then it shouldn't be an issue

the health service could do with some reform in this area too - getting sick over a weekend is much worse than getting sick on a Wednesday

I think we should do away with set weekends in general and have the same number of regular days off available on a more flexible basis (introduce some legislation to enforce at least one day off every X days to prevent this being abused)

I worked weekends when i was younger i would 80% of the staff were parttime. I liked to work the weekends so i could do more in the week.

same with night shifts and 24hr shops some people prefere working the wierd shifts

You do at the moment (rotate sundays), but that's more difficult to rota when Sunday becomes a full working day.

I recognise that plenty do work Sundays and xmas etc - my wife is a healthcare professional, so has worked xmas day in the past - but many of them are much better remunerated for it than are the people who will be most significantly disrupted by this move.

As I said, I'm all for it - I just live with the knowledge of the poor people I tread on as a result. Because I like the convenience :o

I have to say I kinda miss quiet Sundays where nothing is open and it is all about spending time with family and friends.

Still, I guess in this modern fast moving world it isn't a bad thing for most people.

Yeah I sort of feel this way a bit too, but in reality I am so, so in for being able to do stuff late on a Sunday if I need to.

one guy in my old workplace used to only do the night shift

partly because he was a bit anti social and hated management, partly because there was less to do on nights and partly because he got well paid with shift allowances for it... he could turn up to work dressed like a tramp and barely interact with anyone - as long as he got the work done no one cared... he probably made an extra 30k on top of his basic for doing those anti social shifts

you've got to live with that in general - most of your t-shirts were probably made by people treated like absolute ****

some of them kids even, some of your electronic goods were perhaps made by political pensioners in China working as slave labour

Nothing will stop you doing that though. It just gives the option for people who would prefer to go shopping.

Annoys the crap out of me when I decide I want something for tea on a Sunday but I've missed the 4pm cutoff!

I know and you are right I'm just stuck on my old romantic notion of sleepy Mediterranean villages where everything is closed and there is peace and quiet. That's what I like and find it lovely. I just think it is a shame that the world is so busy that they may sacrifice time just to provide a service.

Of course in this modern day and age and shift work these things need to be more flexible. I'm not saying it is wrong, but even when I did live in that sort of environment/culture having things closed was never an issue. I never desperately need anything that badly that cannot wait, but I'm a quite organised like that.

I guess for me I'm just not that mercantile minded and I know I will be in the minority and accept that I'm wrong, but it is just the way I feel. :)

Quite true. Though if you said to me:
"are you happy to see these people working in these conditions to save you 5% on the cost of your goods?" I would say "no"

If you ask me:
"are you happy to see minimum wagers having to work Sundays and missing out on family parties, sports events and suchlike, so that you can buy that box of Frosties and multipack of lucozade that you forgot to get?" I would say "yes"

Yep, it annoys the crap out of me when I'm in Spain and all the lazy buggers shut midway through the day! :p
