24-48 hours, you should get a direct message from Xbox to your Xbox dash/smartglass.

If you still got nothing, drop your GT again and someone (or me) will drop you an invite.

FYI: The inviter have to manually add you as a friend, then invite via console's app, so sometimes mistake can be made if similar tag.
 
I've had mine through, so the system's working. Didn't realise there was another wait after installing the app though - wish I'd not waited to install it now :)
