Governments Porn filters can be bypassed with a Chrome extension.

I heard you can also bypass the porn filter by contacting your ISP and asking them to disable it for you.

The government never fails to amaze me.

The end result is always the complete opposite to what they set out to achieve.

Just look at torrent sites. After being banned by courts (a ban which they knew would never actually work [unless they are actually retarded]), The BBC and many other news outlets published extensive lists of all the best banned torrent sites, this is absolutely huge publicity. Just imagine the surge in traffic, having your website linked by every major news outlet!

examples:

Same goes for this porn publicity charade.
All major news headlines are jam packed with the keywords "Porn" and "Banned". What happens when a kid inevitably sees this weird new word affixed with bannage?? You guessed it, their inquisitive little minds want in. It's a guaranteed way of getting your younguns googling the word "porn" before their 10th birthdays.

I found porn stashes in fields and under rocks at the age of 6 in 1978.

I don't get what the hell they doing? Its like porn never existed until the internet.

I want porn I will find it period and no jumped up arse is going to dictate otherwise. Retards!

I have a great idea! Why not ban porn altogether and give me and the missus something to work for. We could work together very well in the black market it would create. In fact I would work with anyone providing the money was lucrative enough. :p

Just change your dns too abroad.

Ironic really as every 13 year old (boy and girl) probably knows this now, but will have done it to their own devices. Darling mummy trying to protect their children will set the filter and think they don't have to worry, while darling kid will be surfing all the dodgy stuff upstairs without the parents even realising.

What's that I hear? Only another Internet censorship scheme that backfired on the government...:p

Oh and The Pirate Bay has been unblocked for a while now, they moved to a cloud based system after they were taken down a last year and the side effect is it now circumvents the block...:o

I wonder if this also circumnavigates blocks to torrent sites etc. It is totally laughable that all this money got dumped into this plan, only for it to be sharted out by a simple browser add-on less than a week later.

I've always doubted that this was the entire plan. The government must have anticipated people making a work around. They would know it would never last. I think it was probably a good opportunity to appease the public "won't somebody think of the children" sort of thing, while using it as an exercise into intercepting, filtering and essentially controlling incoming internet traffic.

Yup, if there was a service that let me download and play tv/film when I wanted to for a fixed monthly cost (£10-£15 PM) then I would pay it. A lot of people would.

I sold £30 worth of Know How vouchers on ebay recently, a streaming/rental site that charges for film viewings. I got £10 on the open market, so the real "worth" of these vouchers is 1/3rd of the sticker price. Good times!

Thanks for the comprehensive benchmarking.

That cameron guy ain't giving up. He's trying to force 'free' porn sites to only allow UK visitors by showing their ID now or something. He sure hates porn :p

Reminds him of all the weird stuff they did at boys school when he was younger and worries him that there might have been video cameras around.

Anyone on the fence or does not understand.

You basically have to opt into porn, as it will be automatically be filtered by your ISP.

Opt in guys, opt in took in don't be shy now! :p

Yep, I reckon it's this too.

I have used zenmate for quite some time now - allows all the pron and torrent sites i need for free.

(although, it has been a bit of a pig for the last few weeks for some reason :()

Pah back in the day you had to walk up to the counter carrying your chosen porn hand it over so the price could be seen then pay by hand and wait for change before turning your back and walking out of the shop, yet still no one went bankrupt making or selling porn.

What's the big deal, if you're an adult (or a teenager with a bit if ingenuity) and you want to see it you can still get it.

But if you're a child it reduces the chances of coming across it accidentally.

Nobody is trying to ban it for everyone.

The problem is that this really could be a gentle first step, in what could possibly be a more overarching censorship movement in the future. The fact that this exists, means people will be less likely to feel uncomfortable about more severe filtering and censorship that might come later. The effect might be ever so slight, but it'll still be an effect. It certainly couldn't happen overnight, so the only real alternative would be to bring it in gently, for "acceptable" reasons such as this, and then move on bit by bit, as more things become "acceptable" to censor. I'm pretty sure people are on board with censorship of ISIS propaganda in this country. I'm not saying I think this is bad or good, but can you see how that could get dangerous? Although obviously no one sane wants to promote ISIS, when the government decides which political agendas are and aren't censored, it begins to stray in to extremely dodgy territory.
