RX8 - R.I.P.... or is she?

Rebuild it, you're clearly attached to it so logic doesn't come into it. I still miss mine, they get under your skin in a way that other, less explodey cars don't.

As a fellow RX8 owner on 56k miles, I have enjoyed the car a lot - I've had to replace a few bits on it myself:

1). Cat
2). All Brake Pads/Discs
3). Coilpacks
4). Spark plugs
5). Battery
6). Tyres

So not really a great deal. The car has never ever broken down on me - and to date out of all the cars I've owned, it has been the most reliable and fun.

I know that I too will at some point face the same rebuild conundrum as you - although I've had no cold/hot start issues so far.

I'm personally going to go for an engine rebuild - it's the cheapest and easiest option - with rebuilds starting from under £2k. It saves the hassle of being off the road for an undetermined time, while you have to deal with monocoque chassis limitations, exhaust system rerouting and replacement, gearbox/clutch/flywheel adapting, propshaft adjustments, ECU replacement, wiring harness adaptation, pedal adjustments etc.

The whole affair could take many months to complete. Even if you went to a carb engine, without the ECU, you would still have to make significant changes to the car to accommodate an alternative engine.

An Rx8 with a bad engine goes for £700-£1500.

I am considering getting something more efficient but there is nothing out there that drives like the RX8.

Edit: It's all too easy for alternative engine replacement costs to run away with you as well!

SHE'S BACK!!! Silver Fern Performance are the Daddies and Dwayne has sorted her out... went to see her today... she's puring and just needs a good oil engine flush again to finish her off...

I'll be honest... I've missed her bigtime... so... ROXY IS BACK!

Awesome, I assume you went for a rebuild? If you don't mind sharing roughly the cost on a rebuild on one of these. I've had a big soft spot for these for ages :)

Also wondering the same. I convinced myself these were a great track day car buy. You could probably make most of the purchase cost back selling the interior.

Glad you went that route bet you're chuffed.

Selling the interior? The standard leather one sells for peanuts.
Pairs of front seats of pop up for 50-100
Full interiors for under 200
Seen the red/black ones go for a little more.

Unless of course it's an R3 in which case the front go for a tad more I'll have them like :p
Would love a pair of the R3 recaros for my 6

Well I'd rather not say what I paid, however it's less than what I could sell for by a mile so, it made sense to have her back, plus it depends on what parts went. In mine the bearings went which were a right mess...
p
Either way, she's back, just need to tax her again and off we go...

Come on, noones bothered, they're great cars and bargains to buy but fixing them if they go pop is the intriguing bit :p

I actually think I might buy one next year to go alongside the 911, that way I will have 2 cars with engines made of cheese. From what I can gather pricing seems low across the board:

4k gets you into basically any car on that site including Evolve's and Kuro's, The R3 and the Anniversary editions seem to demand a bit of a premium. They are almost disposable cars at that price imo and it sounds like around 2k will get you a decent rebuild should you need one.

Yep, mines the Evolve, lovely interior on it. TBH, you won't find a better handling car for the cost (although mine does have coilovers which made quite a difference so forgotton how it originally handled but I had no complaints as such,)... it's a shed laod of car and the rest of the thing is bullet proof tbh... as long as you put some coin away for the inevitable engine problem, and uprate the oil cooler when it goes and you repair, jobs a good un!

How much is the car worth if the engine hadn't gone boom? (Is there any reason to protect what you paid? Special deal or something?)

How much did it cost you to fix it (and what exactly was the problem in the end?)

Basically as it is now, it's worth around £3k, it's A1 condition... with the tweaks on it etc so I'd not accept much less. However, not new engine in it should be good for a while. Yeah, normally I'd let on however in the this case I'd rather not.

The problem was the rear bearing basically tore itself apart... looked a right mess it was and they do go... so was nothing to do wityh seals or antyhing like that. While done, we've uprated the oil cooler as well which is good, so should be able to pick her up this weekend... cannae wait... time for some daddy love hahaha.

Please tell me during your rebuild you had them re-route the oil metering to a tank rather than the engine oil. Could never understand people not doing it, then use a tank that you fill with 2 stroke and alter the metering delivery rate, or bin it altogether and run premix.

I really miss mine fantastic car, that are plenty reliable when treated correctly, even Mazda don't on there production cars, i mean a lot would be put off if you had to have an extra oil tank to keep full.
