Housing associations

All these people defending housing association on new estates etc, I wonder how many if given 300k would choose to buy with ha tenants renting next door.
 
I can see your point Dowie, I honestly can.

It just seems as though some take the attitude that if a development goes up in and around London with flats worth £200k plus, then the poor should not be allowed anywhere near them and instead should all be forced to live together in an estate made up of shoebox £200 a month studio flats.
 
It's all swings and roundabouts, if you don't have the money to buy a property that is not near social housing, then you are probably the sort of person that someone who does wouldn't want as a neighbour. ;)
 
My brother lives in a lovely new build in Stratford upon Avon, in a four bedroom three story house. I doubt very much that the people living either side of him, who doubtless paid over 300k have a clue that he is a HA tenant...

He's done very well there. Must have a lot of kids though? If so, it'll be a shame when they start to move out as the HA usually start trying to drag you out of it.
 
Yes, lots of kids, some from a previous marriage. He works, his wife works, his elder kids work. Not chavy at all.
Point is, nobody would know, all the HA tenants are mixed up with the private buyers lol

No chav could take part in a rent to buy and few of them could have the points or housing benefit record to get into HA social housing, you are far more likely to get them in private rented slums, bedsit conversions or terraced door onto the street housing like the 8/10,000 folk who live within a mile of me in all directions.
 
Also quick correction to folks talking about 200k flats in London.... short by at least 100k! It really is silly money these days and I do worry what will happen when interest rates get back to where they were pre-crash.

perhaps you should re-read what I've posted, maybe quoting it will help

for example lets see what have I said about part rent/part buy:

part ownership poses some additional risk - there is a history in some developments of some of these properties being given out quite liberally and a lot of repossessions happening as a result (new mortgage regs might have changed this somewhat)
 
What I don't get is why he thought his baseless presumption was gona be right in the first place, so much dumb snobbery exhibited in the thread as a whole, not uncommon on ocuk.

Also goes to prove that even people with decent jobs like myself need to use a housing association scheme to even get on the ladder!

I didn't have a big enough deposit and had to borrow a small amount from family to get the 7k to even get a 100k share.

Normal decent people are priced out of the open market, it's not just chavs and undesirables that are given help!
 
Don't forget that developers don't like building affordable housing because they have to be of a reasonable quality and size. Private dwellings don't so are often of poorer quality than the affordable units!

And to chip in on the "not living near HA properties", there must be some truth to being more likely to get a crappy neighbour in a HA area because house insurance and car insurance is more expensive in those areas, and insurance prices are at their roots based on statistics (and then twisted, and twisted again, and added a few zeros...)

The reason is that you never know who is going to live there.

Why risk it? Doesn't matter how nice the house is if the neighbours are a pain.

Just buy a house with private owners or private tenants both sides. Simple enough to do, even on a new build estate!

Because every private tenant and private owner is a salt of the earth type who's butter wouldn't melt. :rolleyes:

Got me on the ladder when the housing market was doing very badly. If I sold up tomorrow, I'd get nearly 20k more than purchase price.
Is all part of the big plan of get equity then leave Stoke forever!



Perhaps I am the only one who finds the value of £250,000 an absolutely astronomical amount of money. I'd want every box ticked for that amount of money!
Round here it would get a 5 bed with double garage.

Round here you'd get a one bedroom bedsit if you were lucky... ;)
 
Housing association houses are now are part of the new builds in most cases, that's how the developer gets planning permission, there is nothing wrong with this, people have this view that folk living in rented Housing associations are all dossers, you couldn't be more wrong, some just can't afford to get on the property ladder it's that simple, so much snobbery in this thread.

I've lived next to posh people and they were a nightmare with nothing better to do then complain about bins, cars etc and then be selfish ****s

Currently living in privately rented next to council tenants, they work, have loads of kids but are good neighbours

I would own my own home, well the bank could loan me money for one, but as a poor public sector worker in the South East, I've got **** all chance of that anytime soon.

Oh and the majority of housing association tenants are public sector workers, police, nurses etc. cos they can't afford anything else and most work

My last house was next to a new development which had a significant percentage of HA properties, and the rest had shared ownership amongst them. Never any problems.
My current house is on a new development with a section of HA properties, and again haven't had a single problem.
 
I'm in a HA house, on a new build, built 4 years ago. We are part of a six house terrace. All the neighbours know each other, we all chat, all have a laugh, etc etc. We were all in the same boot. Moved in with bare essentials.

The most annoying people on our estate are the bloody snobs! We had one person complain because we had an outside tap fitted. Apparently it looked out of place!

I know very few people my age (29) who have a mortgage on their own place. The mortgage repayments probably wouldn't be too bad, but it's the deposit! Most people I know rent. It is depressing though, knowing I've spent over £26K on rent in 4 years, and it's not even my house! I work bloody hard, just a shame I picked the wrong trade!



BUT, I will add, we (not us personally, but other neighbours) did have problems with one tenant. She was soon removed from the house.
