Best NAS DRIVE

I have 8 x 4tb Seagate NAS drives. They have been running without fault for about a year.

WD Red seems to be the go to drive though, TBH I only went Seagate because they were cheaper at the time.

* edit for typo

Consider the enterprise WD Se as they are pretty much identical to the red pro and in most cases cost a little bit less. I've got 7x 2TB WD Se disks in my server which have run solid for about a year with no issues in a RAID 5 array using an LSI 8888elp.

To be fair though, I have 5 seagate constellation ES that have all be running faultlessly for well over 3 years. (4x 500GB and 1x 750GB) Still doesn't match my old WD raptor 74GB that was bought in 2004 and is still running.

WD Red. Don't think I could ever touch Seagate after having a 125% failure rate over 4 drives within about 4 years (one was replaced and failed again, hence the 125%).

We've had 4 of 4 Se (*might* be Re) drives fail in a WD Sentinel DX4000 - although I suspect that's more because of the housing than the drives possibly. Between approx 12 months and 18 months old.

I would agree Seagate desktop drives are awful recently, especially the 3tb. I can only speak of my experience with the 4tb NAS drives and so far so good.

I would go for the WD Red drives too.

I have 2 x 3TB and 1 x 6TB in my Synology NAS and they are great.

Going to pick up another 6TB this week.

Just checked - they are Se drives.

No idea why we've had such bad luck with them.

I have 7x WD Red 3TB, 5x WD Red 4TB at home and only had one die which was one of the 4TB after about 3 hours. The recertified (spit) replacement has now been going over a year without issue.

Personally I've found failure rates on disks is very variable. One thing I have noticed over the years is that disks that live on their side tend to fail more frequently than those mounted horizontally. I have read some comments that suggested the 4TB Se produces a lot of vibration, which could be part of it. I'm only using 1 & 2TB versions which are extremely smooth & quiet.

As to the original question though, I'd get whichever was cheapest between the Se and red Pro. @ 4TB the red pro is the obvious choice, 2 & 3TB I'd go with Se. Standard red disks have too low a URE for me, too much risk in the event of a parity rebuild. If I could afford to use Re I would have.

I've always rated western digital but I've not had much luck with the Reds. I've had two out of six DOA, then 6 months after that a failure whilst in use. Could probably put this down to the couriers but yeah... They seem way more sensitive when in QNAPs than other disks I've used.
