Yesterday I tried loading the PS store but the console was all sluggish and taking forever to respond so I turned the console off via the switch on the back. Since then it won't read any discs but the little spinning disc icon at the top right of the screen continuously spins. It won't read PS3 or PS1 discs.

Sounds like the BD drive has gone or more specifically the laser assembly (it is a Sony console :p). It's a relatively painless replacement if you want to try it yourself. I had to do that a few years back and the PS3 is still going strong.

Not sure how you could confirm diagnosis without maybe trying to wipe it or rebuild the database - anything to see if it is a hardware rather than a software issue.

I presume everything else like PSN games are all fine...

Ah that dreaded lens failure... I had 4 ps3 systems do this, 3 of them refurbished units from Sony .. In the end Sony supplied a newer slim model which resolved this for me..

It is common and very annoying with ps3 systems. As said. Lens are easy to replace with parts from eBay and I YouTube guide.

Youll need a security torx (cant remember which one - check on ifixit), just make 100% sure that the lens is for the correct BD drive (think you can cross check via what exact PS3 model you have)

The procedures pretty simple if youve ever opened up a PS3 to clean it, you just have to disassemble the BD drive which isnt hard just fiddly. Id say opening up the controller and putting that back together is harder :p

I've had my 360 apart a few times and that was easy enough. Hopefully it won't be much harder than that. I've ordered the parts I need so fingers crossed it works after replacing the faulty ones.

Thanks for the help.

No I wouldn't say so. Had mine since since 2007 with very regular use. PS Store is awful for loading. And If I try to load certain things too early on, that disc will sometimes become stuck.
