How do I recover a formatted hard drive

I made a huge mistake and formatted a hard drive with valuable data, is there some software (preferably free) that I can use to recover it?

You could try the likes of recuva and Pandora recovery. Make sure you use deep scan and a second drive to recover the files to.

Been using this on a backup drive that somehow got formatted during a windows 8 image restore. What is even more strange is that a partition was made with the same name and size as my games ssd but left completely empty.

Slow as anything and did crash after I pressed the wrong button but seems to be doing a good job.

I'm interested to know this as well, just in case the OP wrote zeros to their hard drive to wipe out the data.

Your backup drive got wiped?

Easy solution, copy your data back to the backup drive.

If it was the only copy of the data, then it isn't a backup drive.
