Sandybridge to Skylake?

I was waiting too. But looking at gaming performance there is no point what so ever. Some show less than 1fps difference over a STOCK 2700k.

The only real upgrade route is to socket 2011 really. But even then only when dx12 arrives.

Some gaming benchmarks show Skylake falling behind Haswell and even Ivy Bridge in clock-per-clock comparisons.

As Orangey said, Skylake is a flop.
 
Have a 2700K myself at 5.0Ghz and I think i'll be sticking with it for a little while longer. Really had the upgrade itch to go and move onto 6700K but looking at the benchmarks, it doesn't seem like it's worth it.
 
The only reason to upgrade is if you require some of the platform enhancements, e.g. PCIe 3.0, M2 slot, more bandwidth etc. However if considering dropping that much money on Z170, stretching an extra £50-£100 for X99 will be far better value.
 
In the same position with my 2700K and have been for some time. In my opinion, it's still not worth upgrading yet. The 25% IPC increase is only in specific/extreme cases, using obscure programs the average user will probably never use. Gaming and general system performance has increased very little. Worst comes to wort you'll probably lose a 2-5 fps or have to wait a few seconds more during your encode. Big deal!

Having said that, I am aware that my Z68 motherboard is getting old now and I'm starting to miss out on newer motherboard features, particularly in relation to PCI-Express based storage standards and connectors. Therefore I am going to save up and wait for Skylake-E coming out next year. May cost a lot more but at least I'm getting something significantly more/better than my current system.

Got my 2500K Feb 3rd 2011, I was going to replace it with a Skylake but now ive read the reviews it's staying put and I won't bother replacing it till its 5 years old at the earliest.
 
I'm probably going to replace mine with Skylake, but I may also change my mind yet. Part of the appeal is the HT (which I don't have), DDR4, USB 3.1, SATA Express, M2 etc. I realise most of these features are available with Haswell, but it seems like buying into something obsolete. If I want to have these features, then I may as well go with the newest platform.

Honestly I'm probably going to stick with my 2500k until it dies. At this point I'm not even sure if there will be a worthy upgrade out before 2020. I suppose this is what you get with a monopoly.

Can't agree with you any more :)

My 6600k kit should be delivered tomorrow, I'm not really expecting much coming from a 2500k @4.6. I bought it as my old 2500k rig is going to my brother (he really needed upgrade).

My hope is that z170 will last another generation of CPUs more than anything else, unlike p55 (lga 1156),

Yup, I think Intel/AMD have hit the silicon wall and are flogging off new chipsets to recoup some of wasted money developing the CPU's.

For £500 spent on new board/CPU/RAM, most would be better off upgrading their graphics card or SLI'ing for better game performance.

Who hasn't learned that hype is everywhere these days, you ignore it and get on with your life... If you do CPU bound stuff, Skylake is an improvement on Haswell, by about the same margin as usual. However if you do really CPU bound stuff, you probably have an E designated chip anyway.

If you want to upgrade, then upgrade. Sandybridge is quite old now, there are various benefits to getting a newer architecture, but if all you do is play games then you don't even need an i7 really, so what's the surprise that the latest CPU isn't making a big difference?

Agree, I just don't see why people where expecting skylake to beat or even match Haswell-E.

The i5 is my sweet spot, I just game and watch youtube with my PC. The saving of £100 (vs 6700k/5820K) can be put to better use on the GPU.

I don't see who exactly failed, surely not intel. People will still buy their stuff if they need a new PC, like myself. It is the hype train that failed more than anything else.

My new toys should arrive when I wake up, just a little longer for me the see first hand the difference between Sandy and Skylake.

I agree 100% with all of this I don't want a 6700k,its to expensive ,or a 5820k because they have to much stock,there is nothing in this game that's future proof,Ive just off loaded my 70 year old sandybridge,the money from that plus the £100 I've saved will go towards my next unneeded upgrade.
