Can't get blood test results from GP

How do you know if someone is vegan?

They will ******* tell you!

Aah but how do you know someone isn't vegan? Don't worry they will tell this joke.

What are you having for dinner tonight?

Nothing, didn't have time :(

only 5.99 eat like a vegan champ

WTF, what a riiip.

Got the results, had a quick scan and it looks okay to me, gonna look at it more detail tomorrow.

Iron looks good looking at the blood counts.

surely you must be deficient in something even if it's just iron

You can get enough iron if you eat enough of the right plants. Various leafy greens, if I recall correctly. Calcium's probably a bigger problem, but that's also doable.

The only essential thing you genuinely can't get from plants is B12. A newly introduced deficiency of B12 in your diet will mess you up very slowly (over as long as a few years) since humans can store some B12 and reuse it very efficiently. You can get vegan B12 supplements though (it's a waste product of some bacteria, which few if any vegans would count as animals) and it's often added to vegan/vegetarian food products.

Other than B12, an entirely plant-only diet can be healthy if you know what you're doing, have access to a wide enough variety of plants and sustain a diet with a right mixture of them. Humans are very versatile omnivores.

On a less serious note:

Has the OP gained banana-related superpowers yet? Bananas are radioactive. Radiation causes superpowers related to the source, as proven by Spiderman. So the OP eats enough bananas he'll obviously gain banana-related superpowers.

I called my GP today to get my blood test results and she said they were normal and my blood count was good. I asked her if I can have a print out, she asked me if I were a medical professional otherwise I wouldn't understand the results (I do). I have to call back at 4:30, she's going to talk to the doc.

Is this the same with all GPs? What can I say to get them?

You have no rights to see any of your stuff without interpretation. People think they can see all of their records - they can but only if they go through it with someone. Depending on your blood results then yes I would withhold them. Let's face it people have worked themselves up before and some people have even posted them on forums like this (yes we had it a while ago and looks like you've done it too) so it is done with good reason.

I highly doubt you understand the results unless you are trained. Sorry but that is guff people come out with all the time. You may understand the normal patterns for what you normally have but you wouldn't understand any new eventuality away from that.

Just wanna see them with my own eyes and I need them for reference. Also to show I'm healthy as **** not eating meat, eggs and dairy. :p

Yeah she was nice but I had to nearly beg for the results! I even said I will pay the printing cost.
An FBC won't give you that information. If your gp specifically asked for other tests then maybe you might get to find out if your blood stream is intact a fat stream, but that's pretty much it.

Which is fine, but how about if you want to keep a record of your blood work over several years (say a yearly checkup)? It's much easier to keep them yourself and have them handy, especially if you move around a lot.

Nate, are you aware that somebody can very easily find your twitter and facebook account from that video you posted? You might want to blank out your name if that bothers you.

If you move around a lot then you will have had a variety of labs perform your blood work and therefore those results will need even more scrutiny before any conclusions are drawn.

Which is what the doctor you give them to will do.

I have to say I've never had any issue getting blood work data back, in fact they are normally given to me without me even asking. This is private medicals, so slightly different though (not that I've had many). It seems to be a perculiarly British thing to not know your medical results, even things like cholesterol levels. It's actually been a bit of a pain for me recently as I've had various forms to fill in (from other countries) that request data like that on a fairly regular basis.

There's also the growth of things like HealthKit, the open initiative set up by apple to help medical research. Again basic blood work is requested, but I'm guessing most Brits won't be able to fill that data in.

All that said, perhaps it's a perculiarly North American thing to know all your data.

Yeah I cycle on roads that have been formulated with the use of animal fats, I step on ants everyday, I sit in my friends car with leather seats. Doesn't mean I should go eat a steak though. Veganism isn't about being perfect.

That was a pretty interesting answer, to be fair. Also, Nate, you're doing very well laughing with the posters poking you here: most people tend to get in a mood. Sadly, 'tis the way of GD. :)

Nate looks quite happy in the video :)
That's good.
Even if he is wearing string obtained from the daenons of hell intestinal tracts for shoes ;)

Iron isn't just the one to look at, ferritin levels show reserve, but as Xordium says, viewing the results tells you little or nothing, more than to say they are in range. You were told they were in range, they are in range (except urea for some reason). over time they prove useful if staggered done by the same lab in the same way, taken on the same trip to the lab from you at the same time each time they are done.

The normal Hb and MCV suggests no iron deficiency. Transferrin saturation and ferritin are the best markers of iron status and not iron itself

The urea is low because you don't eat meat, which is fine.

I always ask for a copy these days, medical records have a habit of getting lost and receptionists/secretaries have a habit of screwing up admin... private referrals especially. I've always asked to pick up the referral letter etc.. myself from reception.

I just asked for mine from my GP when I went in for results and he game me a copy.
Annoying thing is even though the print out shows the normal levels min<>max a few showed under (well under) and he said that's ok. Ah well, that was like 2 years ago :P

Was related to thyroid too.
