Absolutely hate the "people" in the area I live

The TA doesn't exist any more, and to be fair it was quite heavily involved in Iraq and Afghanistan so I would be loathe to call those people 'part timers'. But yes, essentially. Although national service is mandatory of course.

But then, why does national service have to be explicitly military in nature? We could put people through a standard bootcamp to mould them, then offer them the chance to do civilian work also: Cleaning hospital for example.

Of course it does, it's just had it's name changed to The Army Reserve.
Still exactly the same as the TA though.
 
Just want to chip in that I am Staffordshire born and bred and it is no better or worse than many other counties out there.

I spent most of my life on the Staffordshire/west midlands border so I don't sound like a Stokie and only moved up to the area proper in 2007. In the main, Stoke is a very friendly place and I have been heartily 'adopted' as a funny sounding foreigner (I have a west midlands accent) :D

But like all areas it has it's fair share of rough places and scummers (IE Weston Coyney, Fenton, Tunstall etc).

Personally if you can, OP, I advise moving out of the city - there are some lovely places in the surrounding areas :)
 
If someone threatened an animal of mine I'd start carrying something akin to Crocodile Dundee. You should definitely move to a better area. I don't live in an expensive area, it's mostly working class, but I feel like I can walk anywhere at anytime without being threatened

Not quite. Over twenty years weightlifting experience etc. This was a situation where there were two cars of chavy scum bragging to a group of eight youths and one with a bull mastiff who thought it would be a good idea to show how much of a man he was to try and intimidate a lone passer- by walking a border collie. I live on the better side of the area, but unfortunately it adjoins a council estate where they send all the dross from the other bad areas of the city. I'm not being prejudicial to people on council estates either as I have known some very nice people who live on council estates.

The sad thing is that even though the correct answer should be 'get the police involved, they will sort it out' we all know that is not the case and most peoples advice is 'move to a better area'.
Not everyone can do that, and as time goes on more and more areas will turn in to dumps. Unfortunately we can't all live in private gated communities protected from the outside world.

4. Next time you encounter said youth's electrify your dogs balls sending it into a beserker rage

Try anything in your power to just move.

It's really not worth it living in worry that some chavs are going to kick off at you.

Seriously. Life is too short for that kind of ****.

back on subject, have you an aversion to moving to a different part of the City? There are loads of nice areas. 100% agree on Malevolence, lots of affordable houses in nice areas in ST4 and it's only a stone's throw up the A500 to the north of the city.

It has quite a bit of relevance insofar as It was intended to illustrated that if you look like a tank you would be less likely to be perceived as an easy victim by a bunch of cowards. The comment was directed at the poster who was trying to ludicrously make light of my predicament by suggesting I must have the kind of face that is begging for it. Whatever that may be? On a more serious note it would be better to leave.
