drivers in thailand

the amount of gruesome accident videos that come from that corner of the world backs up the terrible driving you've witnessed.

Lol so its your first time in the 3rd world.

When I arrive in Thailand from india I always feel I have arrived in civilization and the roads are just so much better.

I am posting this from my hotel room in India, I have not bothered to leave the hotel for the last 3 days because its just such a pain outside a couple more weeks before I can get out of here.

Out of a matter of interest what city are you currently based in? I live out here, and it would be nice to meet up with a fellow Brit if you are anywhere close to me.

P.S Traffic is a nightmare and yes its a surprise I do not see that many accidents.

I remember arriving in Thailand and thinking the same. Three or four people on a scooter. One had a guy carrying a large TV under his arm and another had a chicken in a cage. :D

I quite enjoy the anarchy on the roads.

Just make sure you don't let a taxi driver haggle you for a fixed fare anywhere; it's a scam. Oh, and don't let any old women give you seeds for the birds in the park. We had one follow us through the park and wouldn't give up until we took the seeds. We didn't of course because we knew she wanted money, but she then latched the bag onto my mates rucksack and started crying and wailing. She then wouldn't take them back off my mate, so we just left them on the ground  Mentalist.

Welcome to developing countries :)

It's good fun, riding a bike around Thailand. India is even more mental, good fun on a Bullet (enfield) :D

How do they get away with it? Is it simply the lack of police?

It's not England :p. People don't religiously follow the rules, plus the tests they have to take (if any) for a licence are probably terrible. The police are also corrupt as hell, and don't particularly care. I would just go around road blocks in India with them shouting at me and had them running out from the pavement a few times at me telling me to stop. Ignore them and they give up.

Best to ignore them as a tourist (in India anyway) as they'll try stop you for anything and 'fine' you.

You have to let all your British sensibilities go in a lot of places.

I drove myself in Thailand for a year and also in and around Bangkok. Once you learn the "rules" it's easy and I never had any issues or road rage. It's actually a lot more laid back than the UK.

Im in Pune, are you close? Im here for work for a few weeks

I have not seen any roadrage in India either. I guess the basic assumption in India is that everyone is trying to get somewhere and they move around each other to succeed. There is no malice and no aggression from my experience.

As a brit this is hard to accept, and you do have to let basic logic and behaviours take a jump out of the window.

In the UK we assume that people should follow the rules, and if they don't.....how dare they! Consequence roadrage.

Yup, it is a lot more relaxed. Go at whatever pace you like and nobody is going to stress out at you like in the UK. Yes, you'll get hooted at, but they hoot for the right reason over there - to make you aware of them, rather than in the UK where hooting is generally seen as annoyance.

Also, don't forget, anything bigger than you on the road has right of way :)

Most countries are abit nuts in road sense, India being the worst! Clapped out mercs and peds, Must wear through horn units there there forever beeping!!

Can confirm. Drove across the country in a rickshaw a couple of years ago. Simply brilliant/insane/terrifying.

Not too far, but not close enough :( My business has me working between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, but at the moment I am in Ahmedabad for the next few weeks.

I will be in Ahmedabad in around a week or 2, most probably in the Marriott again.

There are some good places to eat in Ahmedabad :).

I am surprised there is some night life here in Pune, I actually managed to hit some of the bars last Friday and met some locals and expats.

At the moment I am just down the road from the Marriott while my place is being renovated (living at my in laws). I will trust you my mobile number, if you fancy hooking up when you come down let me know.

So, I arrived in Thailand for my holiday.

we had a large van type taxi transport us to our hotel, and I have to say the standard of driving here is shocking.

the speed limits are around 50kmh to 80kmh, yet this chap was doing 110 everywhere.
the scooters, oh my god the scooters, no helmets, de restricted, shirts and shorts, all over the road and within inches of hitting cars and vans.

the driver in our van drove down the middle of the two lanes to stop people over taking and also to overtake everything in sight, he would beep and flash anything in front even though he was the one speeding.

I saw so many modified cars, blue and red flashing lights on them, neons everywhere. Was like I was in the 90s!

That and police don't care....

Be careful when being driven/driving in Thailand.

Yeah, the first time I got on a bus in China is was probably the most terrifying experience of my life. The bus was absolutely falling to bits, there were people sitting on the floor, 2 ducks got out of a sack after we collected people from a market and were flapping around the bus (nobody batted an eyelid). The driver had his foot to the floor the whole time and would be passing everything, with oncoming vehicles just swerving out the way to make room. Then we went up into the mountain roads with massive drops right next to the window.

Actually....it was bloody awesome! :)
