You keep talking about the IQ being lowered, that was BF4 and lowering the settings actually helped freesync

They ALSO ran it with the same IQ settings, apple for apples and that helped gsync, which seems to be the opposite of what you want

Read above and read the article, IQ settings was BF4, Monitor issues 'which half of them tested' was BL2, Free-Sync Disabled as it was outside its refresh range.

Yeah but it made no difference to the final result, the "NVIDIA" lower IQ settings actually lost them a user, and if you remove borderlands from the whole thing the result is the same

The Bottom Line

AMD is at a disadvantage because it doesn’t have the variable refresh range coverage currently enjoyed by Nvidia. If you spring for the QHD/FreeSync/IPS display we tested with and run a game like Borderlands on a 390X, it’s going to fall outside of 35-90Hz almost exclusively, even if you dial in the most taxing settings possible. Conversely, the QHD/FreeSync/TN screen we could have chosen instead would have likely run into issues with the quality settings we used in The Witcher, which averaged in the 40s, but also dipped lower.

Freesync just seems like another cop out by AMD to make a 3rd party responsible for somthing under the cover of it being open source.

This time the monitor producers where last time it was the programers with mantle. In my opinion AMD like open source as it slways gives them a scape goat to blame when somthing goes wrong. They also like the dubious moral high ground against nvidia.

Saying that we have all ready seen why open source is not always great when companies are releasing 120mhz monitors with freesync, but the small print so to speak then advies freesync only works at a much lower rate. While this is shady by that company it is only possible due to AMD abdicating all responsibility for a feature of there product.

Its not all bad, its a good test in a way, if you use a screen with a wider refresh-rate for Free-Sync to work you'd be alright, or a more powerful GPU to stop it falling below 35 FPS.

AMD should force vendors to widen the rates at which Free-Sync works, like below 35 FPS.

I agree that it is a legitimate part of the test but at the end of the day if Free-Sync is disabled in parts of the game the experience of it isn't going to be great.

Toms Harware acknowledge this disadvantage.

A better test would be of the quality of Free-Sync and G-Sync would be where both are actually running all the time, as they said themselves, perhaps on a different screen.

And that is one of the issues with free sync, poor ranges compared to gsync.

There are FreeSync monitors with great ranges though. Like the Acer XG270HU has 30-144Hz range... I can't actually find a solid value for G-Sync range but I think it's also 30-144Hz?

G-Sync works all the way down to 1fps. PCPER did a test with it and showed what happens when G-Sync is at 20 fps for example. With both AMD and Nvidia representatives being at the testing, you would hope things were done fairly and this seems to be the case.

Yeah, FreeSync definitely loses to G-Sync when fps drops below the range. nVidia have a smart solution for dealing with it, but AMD don't. One would hope they rectify this at some point, or simply have monitors with a lower bottom range. Then again, do you really want to be gaming at 20fps? ;P

I think many of the reasons for people choosing G-sync will be due to better perceived smoothness. From their drivers having less overhead. But it would have been nice if they also posted the frametimes and framerates the test platforms were getting.

Because even if you are syncing the output frames to the refresh, you will still get hitching if the frametimes are erratic.

I think if they used a DX12 title then the different will be harder to tell. I am sure i read that many people saw bigger improvements when using Mantle In BF4 with freesync compared to using DX11.

The Fiji series is shocking with Mantle in BF4 and I don't believe AMD are revisiting it either. I was a little disappointed to find that out and a 290x was as quick as a Fury X when both are running Mantle.

I would have liked to have tried Freesync and if Greenland is faster than Pascal, I will be trying it.

One can't make an informed decision from this.

Didn't they say that AMD and Nvidia both signed off on their choice of monitors, GPUs and games?
So they must both have thought it was a fairly even test or why sign off on it?

I agree that using the TN monitors where both had a 144Hz refresh rate would've been nicer.
While Borderlands was a bit of a landslide, I believe the AMD favouring title BF4 was also preferred on GSync regardless of the IQ setting.

I did laugh that one user was able to guess the AMD machine because of the heat it was kicking out
