Hastings Direct - OK?

Good timing on this thread. Direct Line have just sent me a renewal that's £15 more expensive than the current price, the cheeky sods. A quick comparison and Hastings came out £170 cheaper straight off the bat. Will be giving DL a ring tomorrow and if they can't match it, I'll be switching.

On a serious note though just because they have been around ages doesn't mean they will be fine.

Plenty of other companies have been around for ages and are a pig to deal with.

Having a UK based call center is useful though, nothing worse than trying to make out what a foreign call center is saying over a bad line, that said I do find it hard to understand people with heavy accents whether it's Scottish or Scouse.

I was with Hastings last year, I got shunted by a young lady who's insurers were utterly useless so I queried getting hastings to sort it & they just wanted to collect the car & write it off without even assessing it due to it being over 10 years old.

Yes it's over 10 years old but it's got a full service history from new & only 1 previous owner & is in perfect condition aside from the usual stone chips, I aint having it written off for a damaged rear bumper.

Her insurers coughed up in the end to pay for me to repair the car myself when I gave them ridiculous requirements for a hire car.

I'll see how they go then for the next 12 months!
May start an 'alternative to Hastings' thread next year :p

Had my renewal quote from, Hastings Direct today at £340 which is £40 more then last year. Went to a comparison website and got a Hastings Direct quote for £260.

Will be an awesome conversation on the phone when I tell them I won't be renewing with their offer because I had a cheaper quote ;)

A bit egg on face.

I had exactly the same scenario at renewal. Just rang them up and asked them to honour the internet quote.

Gave them the reference and they honoured it no problem. Great customer service.

They can't be as bad as Octagon insurance - avoid them like the plague!!

Had to make my first claim in 11 years as someone drove into the back of my car - took 4 months for them to get round to fixing it, 50 phone calls (all charged at premium rate). The most appalling customer service I've ever experienced - they tried to void my policy by claiming I said I parked my car in a drive when its actually on the road - took them a month to realise that one of their operatives had recorded the information I had supplied incorrectly.

This year ended up paying the extra £50 to go with Churchill - would rather pay that little bit extra to be covered by decent customer service when things go wrong.

Just a bump for anyone else who's taken out insurance with this lot. If you need to use the windscreen cover, there is standard number to call, but Hastings use two companies - AutoWindscreens or Nationwide Motorglass. I gather the number will go to one or the other.

Given my recent experience, I'd certainly advise going with Nationwide. Long story short (see http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=28952657&postcount=11836), AutoWindscreens arranged two appointments with me - the first time failing to turn up with the right windscreen seal, the second time, failing to turn up with any glass at all

By comparison, Nationwide Motorglass were communicative, friendly and efficient and had a OEM screen direct from the dealer installed in the car within a week of the original enquiry.
