Don't mount a tv above a warm fire. It'll get ******. Some people will say I'm talking rubbish but I've seen multiple tv's above fires and they have heat haze running up the screen. My samsung died after a year and I put it down to overheating.

My tvs been above the gas fire for 5 years and still perfect. Newer LED ones with hardly any bezel might not be as good though.

Just the ticket. Although the fuse box is behind one of the "cupboards" so can't go too crazy

Get rid of the fire and board it up and put a TV on the wall. Thats exactly what I did with mine as I was never going to use the fire.

Personally I'd have it removed, make the wall good and new carpet then buy a low media unit as I think the TV on the wall will look odd since the width of the room would mean it would need to be fitted pretty low for it to be comfortable viewing.

Peter do have a tv above your gas fire?

No. Our TV isn't huge. There is just a big mirror over the fireplace that the missus will never part with. Our lounge is also square compared to the pics you posted.
