Don't mount a tv above a warm fire. It'll get ******. Some people will say I'm talking rubbish but I've seen multiple tv's above fires and they have heat haze running up the screen. My samsung died after a year and I put it down to overheating.
Personally I'd have it removed, make the wall good and new carpet then buy a low media unit as I think the TV on the wall will look odd since the width of the room would mean it would need to be fitted pretty low for it to be comfortable viewing.
No. Our TV isn't huge. There is just a big mirror over the fireplace that the missus will never part with. Our lounge is also square compared to the pics you posted.
